DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DRAMA BRINGS IN GUEST DRECTORS AND DESIGNERS TO TACKLE SHAKESPEARE'S TWELFTH NIGHT
BLOOMINGTON, IN --The Lee Norvelle Theatre & Drama Center is proud to present Twelfth Night, Shakespeare's most successful comedy. Guest director Henry Woronicz notes that in Twelfth Night, “there is a love story involved, a little adventure. There is a little swash-buckle pirating, and it all comes together in this great mix of theatre.” This energetic and hilarious play opens in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre Friday, February 23 at 7:30 and continues February 24 and 26- March 3.
The talented cast of Twelfth Night includes many graduate and undergraduate Theatre and Drama majors. The graduate students include Matt Buffalo ( Reel ) as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Jeff Grafton ( The Birthday Party, Arcadia ) who plays Sir Toby Belch, Allison Moody ( Reel, The Birthday Party, Our Country's Good ) starring as Viola, Lilia Vassileva ( The Crucible ) as Olivia and Eric Van Tielen ( Urinetown, Arcadia, She Stoops to Conquer) as Malvolio. Joining these graduate students are talented undergraduates Nick Arapoglou ( Arcadia, The Crucible, The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr [abridged] ) as Orsino, Lindsey Charles ( The Crucible) as Maria, Kevin Anderson ( Urinetown ) as Sebastian, Joanne Dubach ( Urinetown ) as Feste, and Claire Tuft ( Wit ) as Curio. Filling out the cast are Steve Thomas, Joann Jacobs, Phil Kasper, Michael Roe and Jamaal McCray. These theatre students have performed in theatres across the country and they bring a wealth of knowledge and talent to the stage.
Twelfth Night is directed by Henry Worornicz. Mr. Woronicz brings a wealth of nationally-recognized Shakespearean experience to this production. He served as the Artistic Director for the acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival from 1991-1995. While there, he directed Pravda, The Rehearsal, Hamlet, Cymbeline, La Bete, and All's Well that Ends Well . Away from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival he has directed at theatres across the country. Henry is also a respected actor, playing numerous roles on Broadway, including his performance as Trebonious in Julius Caesar at the Belasco Theatre with Denzel Washington, and in Shakespearian festivals across the country, including the venerable Utah Shakespearean Festival. On television he has had roles on Law and Order, Seinfeld, and Star Trek: The Next Generation, among many others. Mr. Woronicz was drawn to the play because Twelfth Night works on many different levels. “It works as a pure love story level. It works as a comic farce with comedic farce and mistaken identities and things like that, and at the same time, there is a melancholy about the play… The play is tinged with a level of reality that the characters keep having to deal with, which has to do with unrequited love, lost siblings, death, drunkenness, all kinds of things that can just inhibit our lives and keep us from finding our true path.”
In addition to bringing Mr. Woronicz to Indiana , the Department of Theatre and Drama is also bringing in guest scenic designer Robert Mark Morgan. Robert received his M.F.A. in scenic design from San Diego University . He has designed many productions including Ordinary Nation at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, The Ice-Breaker at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco , A Christmas Story at the San Jose Repertory Theatre and the Studio Arena Theatre, Arms and the Man at the American Players Theatre, and Jesus Hates Me at the Denver Center Theatre Company. Robert has won numerous awards for his designs including a display in the US Exhibit at the 2007 Prague Design Quadrennial and the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Best Set Design of 2004. Joining him in designing Twelfth Night are M.F.A. Lighting Designer Jesse Portillo for whom Twelfth Night is his thesis project, Costume Designer Katherine N. Garlick ( The Crucible ), and Sound Design by Assistant Professor Andrew Hopson (The Birthday Party, The Crucible).
