The Department of Theatre and Drama enjoys a rich tradition and history, and the links on this page present an ongoing documentation of our past and present activities.

The history of the department is an interesting one, and the essay in this link traces the story of productions, performace, teaching, and training at the university, from the late 19th century to the present.

In the summer of 1949, Nashville businessman A. Jack Rogers and Indiana University professor Lee Norvelle formed the not-for-profit Brown County Playhouse, Inc. and began an exciting theatre tradition in the hills of southern Indiana. We will provide a link to a brief history of the oldest professional summer theatre in state.

We are compiling a web-accessible list of the department's productions, 1929 to the present, which will cover all venues associated with the school: the University Theatre, the T300 Studio Theatre, the Brown County Playhouse, the Showboat Majestic, the IU Broadway Caberet, and the Jordan River Revue. Part of this project includes an ongoing documentation of the productions themselves, from initial research and production concepts to designs and photographs of the plays-in-performance.
