Description of Major

Cytotechnologists are a medical laboratory specialists who assist with the detection and diagnosis of disease using samples drawn from various human body sites. They prepare slides and microscopically examine them for abnormalities of all types, including cancerous and precancerous cells. They also search for microbial causative agents for inflammatory diseases and abnormalities that indicate other disease processes. The major in cytotechnology involves the study of biology, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology and includes general education course work. Students may take the courses required for admission to this major at IUB, but must complete the degree in Indianapolis at the IU School of Medicine. Advanced science courses such as microbiology, developmental anatomy, embryology, genetics, molecular or cellular biology, histology and immunology are taken in their junior year. The professional program consists of 37 credit hours of cytology and cytopathology coursework.

Students who attend IU Bloomington for their first three years of coursework gain a strong foundation in both the sciences and the humanities at one of the country’s leading research universities. Students have access to one of the most comprehensive medical facilities in the nation at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis during their senior year where they will do their clinical and professional work. Students graduating from the cytotechnology program are qualified to sit for the national certification exam in cytotechnology. Our graduates have a 100 percent placement rate and are sought by professional medical organizations around the nation.
