Winter League Rules

The objective of Winter League is fun first and competition second. This means that every player, regardless of skill level is entitled to the same amount of playing time as the best player on the team. Gently encourage players who are not receiving their fair share of playing time to enter the game. If you find a player to be taking a disproportionate amount of playing time tell your team captain. If you are an experienced player matched up against a novice, help teach them the finer points of the game (rules, strategy, Spirit).

The Basics

  • 7 second stall count.
  • Hard walls are out of bounds, nets are in bounds. (Walls are also very dangerous. Running into the walls has caused serious injuries: a broken kneecap, broken ribs, torn cartilage, numerous concussions, etc.)
  • Games are timed: 55 minutes per game - no clock stoppages whatsoever.

Scoring and Timekeeping

Because we have very strict time constraints, many of these rules are designed to keep the game moving.

  • Games are 55 minutes in duration. The clock does not stop. There is no half-time. There are no times-out. The clock does not stop for injuries.
  • Games begin promptly at the time listed. Points will be assessed. Your team should have 5 players on the line before the game begins to assure no penalties are assessed on your team. Once the clock starts, a penalty point is assessed after each 60 seconds that a team does not have 5 on the field ready to begin.
  • 20 seconds between points. Time is running! After a point is scored each team has 20 seconds to make substitutions and get 5 players on the line. Teams should exhibit good sportmanship by being expedient about putting the disc in play. Using the 20 seconds to delay putting a disc in play is discouraged and a plague shall certainly befall thee. (Captains, teaching and instruction should happen on the sideline, especially given our time constraints.)
  • Play ends when time expires. Points in progress are not completed unless a team has an opportunity to tie or win during that point. In the event of a tie, one additional point is played to determine the winner.
  • Too Little Too Late Rule: If the trailing team cuts the deficit from two goals to one goal with fewer than 20 seconds remaining, the leading team is under no compulsion to hurry back to the line to give the trailing team an opportunity to tie the score. In other words, if your team is trailing by two goals with 20 seconds left, your team loses.

Field of Play

  • Close the doors when entering or exiting the field. An open door is an invitation to injury.
  • Out-of-bounds: If a disc touches the hard walls, the area inside the soccer goals, the ceiling, or the running track above the playing field, it is a turnover. A disc that touches the netting is not a turnover (unless it also hits a hard surface wall, ceiling, or running track). A player is not considered out-of-bounds if they are in contact with the wall during possession of the disc.

Pulls

  • If a pull hits any hard surface (wall, ceiling, etc.) the disc may be put in play on the goalline or where the disc lands.
  • If a pull lands in the endzone or is caught by a player in the endzone then the disc is put in play from that position.

Big George Rule

  • If a player is forced to establish a pivot foot within two feet of the wall, s/he may say to his defender "Big George Rule," and then proceed to re-establish a pivot foot at a point two feet perpendicular from the wall where the player's original pivot foot was planted. The player may not throw the disc, and the defender may not increase the stall count while a player is establishing the new pivot foot. Once the pivot foot is established, the stall count resumes where it was left off and the disc is in play. There is no check of the disc.

Standings

Standings will be determined by the following criteria:
  • Number of victories
  • Head-to-head record
  • Point differential
