Spring Collegiates as seen by Gravy
Our roster at Collegiates in Greenville, NC was: Cho, Jan, Drew, Molter,
Gravy, Pat, Noah, Kolb, Max, OB, Rob, Dave, Teddy, Mertz. We were the 3rd seed
in original pool C. The fields we played on were almost all uphill/downhill.
On the drive down friday, we stopped at a rest stop somewhere in America and
were throwing around in the cold. Dave tried to throw a forehand huck from
across the street and almost hit an old woman in the face. But instead he
left a nice dent in her SUV, and she made up some sob story and bamboozled
Dave into financially fornicating her~OWNED!
Our first game was against the 2nd seed in our original pool, Florida St.
Apparently we didn't warm-up very well, because we came out very slow. Only
having 9 players, FSU ran their offense through their superstar, Stephen.
After we scored the first point of the game, the scored the next 5 and later
took half 7-3. We did a poor job of defending the force side and stopping
them from breaking us in the first half. We called very tight lines in the
2nd half, with 9 players seeing a majority of the playing time, and finally
started fighting our way back into the game. We stepped up the intensity on
defense, forcing FSU to turn it over a lot more than they did in the first
half. They had worked their way to a 12-9 lead, but we scored 3 in a row to
tie it up at 12. At some point in this late run we had, FSU threw a hammer to
one of their open players on the break-side in the endzone, but it hung long
enough for Max to get there and make a game-saving D. On Universe point, one
of their players had the disc near our goaline and was late to look for his
dump. When he turned to throw it just before being stalled, he threw it
straight to Cho who scored the game-winning Callahan. We stormed the field as
our school song played loudly over the imaginary speakers.
Indiana 13- FSU 12
Our second game was against the top seed in our pool William & Mary. We were
still pumped up from our close win over FSU, and started battling it out early
in this game. We made a few mistakes and they took a 4-2 lead on us. We
scored the next point, and then decided to stop playing hard. They took half
7-3, and scored 9 of the final 11 points to finish the game. Once again we
played bad force-side defense and got broken a lot. We just lacked intensity
the final 3/4 of the game. W&M's defense was a step above what we are used to
seeing, and we had a lot of trouble getting the dump off in this game. Teddy
got a D in his only point in this game. This was gravy's last game of the
weekend, still hurting from his mardi gras injury.
Indiana 5- W&M 13
Our third game was against the 4th seed in our pool, Elon. There was some low
winds so we tried our contain zone in the first half-and it looked terrible.
We took half 7-5. They scored the first point after half then we took the
next 5. Next came a marathon point (we had 6 turnovers and 2 D's) which they
ended up scoring. Then we scored to take the game. We played down to Elon's
level and looked pretty bad the whole game, even in our 5 point run.
Indiana 13- Elon 7
We finished 2-1 in our pool but ended up in 3rd place. FSU beat W&M, so those
2 teams also finished 2-1. Our point diff was -1 in pool play, leaving us in
3rd place and putting us in the Chump division for the remainder of the
tournament.
Our fourth game of the day was against Mary Washington in our new Chump Pool.
Jan played the first 5 points of this game and took the rest of the day off to
rest his injured leg, but would return sunday. Kolb sat out almost the entire
first half for going to use the restroom, a punishment his teamate closest to
his height did not recieve. Throughout this game, it seemed that we were
losing points solely because of a lack of effort. We never seemed to have 7
people on the field that wanted to run hard, play D, and make solid
decisions. We had no intensity at all in this game, and it looked like some
people were jogging around trying to conserve energy for something. Mary
Washington liked to send it deep, which resulted in some of their scores. The
game was close throughout, we took half 7-6. After taking an 11-8 lead, we
let them come back and the game was tied at 13. At this point, the winner
would be the first one to 15. We traded points, and it came down to Universe
point for the 2nd time of the day. We won on an Dru forehand to OB. Cho is
obviously in great shape because he played 26 of the 29 points in this game.
Mertz caught his first score of the year in this game.
Indiana 15- Mary Washington 14
Our fifth and final game of the day was against Maryland. This team was
pretty good. They were a fast team with good break throws. They took half 7-
4, and the game 13-7. We played harder/better than the previous game, but
they were too much for us.
Indiana 7- Maryland 13
Our first game sunday was our final Chump Pool game against Virginia Tech.
Our offense and defense looked better than it had on saturday in this game.
We scored 4 of the first 5 points and took half 7-3. This was one of two
games that stats were kept, so here are some of them: OB had a footblock
(plus a few more on the weekend), Drew had a nice deep D, plus 4 thrown/2
caught scores, as well as a handblock on their female. Cho threw 3 scores and
caught one. Jan threw 2 scores and had that many turnovers in one point.
Kolb threw 2/caught 2 scores. Teddy caught 2 scores. Noah, Molter and Dave
all had a D and caught a score.
Indiana 13- Virginia Tech 7
Our next game was Chump quarters against Case Western. I was away getting
food, so I don't have a lot of details on this game. I know that when I left
in the first half, we were easily controlling the game. We took half 7-2.
Then we traded points for a while and finally won 15-9. Score sheet says Rob
G caught four scores, Mertz caught another score, and Cho had one "Jedi Mind
Trick"-since I missed this I have no idea what it means.
Indiana 15- Case Western 9
Next game was Chump Semi's against Pittsburgh. Game started out 2-2 and both
teams were pumped up/argueing over questionable calls on both sides. Pitt
then went on a 5-0 run and then took half 8-3. We had a lot of trouble with
the force-middle D, as well as their force-sideline zone. Our handlers were
condensed on almost a half of the field and couldn't get any good looks up
field. We also had a problem stopping their swing pass after the dump
(something we struggled with all weekend). We had so many turnovers as Pitt
just dominated us.
Indiana 4- Pitt 15
We left dissapointed, having played much worse than we did the previous
tournament, with a 5-3 record tied for 11th place.
