III. COURSES FOR FRESHMEN
Most students (if they have not satisfied the University Composition Requirement through their SAT, ACT, or AP-Composition scores) fulfill the composition requirement by enrolling in W131, L141-L142, or W170. W131, Elementary Composition, is a one-semester course that offers instruction and practice in the reading and writing skills required in college, with an emphasis on written assignments that call for synthesis, analysis, and arguments based on sources. L141-L142, Introduction to Writing and the Study of Literature, is a two-semester set of courses, carrying a total of eight credits, which combines intensive practice in composition with literary study. W170, Projects in Reading and Writing, is a one-semester course which offers a challenging sequence of projects that encourage sustained inquiry into complex problems or significant issues. Other ways of fulfilling the composition requirement are described in the University Division Bulletin.
Freshmen who have completed or are exempted from the composition requirement are encouraged to enroll in any of the Department's 200-level G or L courses. Freshmen who are especially interested in creative writing should enroll in W103, Introduction to Creative Writing.
