New York City Cabaret Music
April 20, 2007

This week on Afterglow we feature songs from The Erteguns’ New York: New York Cabaret Music. Compiled by Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, this collection chronicles the cabaret jazz singers that he and his brother Nesuhi enjoyed seeing in the world of 1940s and 50s Manhattan. Performers include Sylvia Sims, Mabel Mercer, Chris Connor, and lesser-knowns such as Mae Barnes and Ted Straetter, all of them offering up stylish, elegant, and witty musical fare from the Golden Age of hip supper-club entertainment. We’ll also have two birthday-set tributes to singer Ella Fitzgerald. “New York Cabaret Music” airs Friday, April 20 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU.

Afterglow airs every Friday evening at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU. Broadcasts are made available for listening at any time the following week in the Afterglow archives.
