Afterglow

Sloane Sings Duke, Bunch Plays van Heusen

This week on Afterglow we feature new releases on the Arbors label from two jazz veterans: singer Carol Sloane’s Ellington tribute, Dearest Duke, and pianist John Bunch’s salute to songwriter Jimmy van Heusen, At the Nola Playhouse. Sloane takes on the Ellington songbook with minimal but highly effective backing, using only a saxophonist /clarinetist (Ken Peplowski) and pianist (Brad Hatfield), while Bunch—a bombardier in World War II who played professionally in Indiana before moving to California in the mid 1950s—employs a standard piano trio in his interpretations of Jimmy van Heusen’s songs, many of which became hits for Frank Sinatra. We’ll also hear from Kate McGarry, Mel Torme, James Carter, Nancy Wilson, Patti Austin, Jimmy Rowles, Bing Crosby, and others. “Sloane Sings Duke, Bunch Plays van Heusen” airs Friday, May 18 at 10:05 p.m. on WFIU.
