This
week on Afterglow well feature recent reissues
from EMIs Great Jazz Vocal Collection
series by Chris Connor (a live performance from New York
Citys Village Gate in the early 1960s), Irene Kral
(with Herb Pomeroys great late-1950s Boston big band),
and Sue Raney (a 1964 album recorded with Stan Kenton arranger
Ralph Carmichael). Well also have a set of music devoted
to the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, with covers
of his songs by Madeleine Peyroux, Petra Haden, and Brad
Mehldau. Pianist Erroll Garners treatment of the classic
movie theme Laura,
vibraphonist Stefon Harris take on a Duke Ellington
composition, and a Bob Brookmeyer-Kenny Wheeler collaboration
round out this weeks edition of Afterglow,
which airs Friday, June 15 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU.
