Jazz Vocal Reissues I
June 22, 2007

This week on Afterglow we’ll feature recent reissues from EMI’s “Great Jazz Vocal Collection” series by Chris Connor (a live performance from New York City’s Village Gate in the early 1960s), Irene Kral (with Herb Pomeroy’s great late-1950s Boston big band), and Sue Raney (a 1964 album recorded with Stan Kenton arranger Ralph Carmichael). We’ll also have a set of music devoted to the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, with covers of his songs by Madeleine Peyroux, Petra Haden, and Brad Mehldau. Pianist Erroll Garner’s treatment of the classic movie theme “Laura”, vibraphonist Stefon Harris’ take on a Duke Ellington composition, and a Bob Brookmeyer-Kenny Wheeler collaboration round out this week’s edition of Afterglow, which airs Friday, June 15 at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU.

Afterglow airs every Friday evening at 10:05 p.m. EST on WFIU. Broadcasts are made available for listening at any time the following week in the Afterglow archives.
