WFIU Presents
Afterglow
Gil Evans on Pacific Jazz
10/13/2006
This
week on Afterglow well feature the late-1950s Pacific
Jazz albums of pianist, arranger, and composer Gil Evans. Evans
is legendary for his late-1950s work with trumpeter Miles Davis
(Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain);
these lesser-known LPs, recently reissued by Blue Note as one CD
(including liner notes by Indiana Universitys own David Baker),
showcase an application of his writing talents to such warhorses
as St. Louis Blues, King Porter Stomp, and
other jazz standards. Among the soloists joining Evans are alto
saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and trumpeter Johnny Coles. Well
also hear music from Anita ODay, Jeri Southern, Warne Marsh,
Nat King Cole, Bill Potts, and others. Gil Evans on Pacific
Jazz airs Friday evening at 10:05 EST on WFIU.
