"A Brief Convergence: Miles Davis & Sam Rivers in 1964." In early 1964 Miles Davis had a stellar rhythm section of Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. He needed a tenor saxophonist, and the one he wanted, Wayne Shorter, was temporarily committed to playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Davis turned to a little-known Boston musician two years older than him, a saxophonist recommended by the teenaged Tony Williams--Sam Rivers. This program includes live recordings of Rivers with Davis in Japan in 1964, as well as selections from FUSCHIA SWING SONG, the Blue Note album that Rivers recorded later that year with Carter, Williams, and Boston pianist Jaki Byard.
