Men defy stereotypes in defining masculinity

Contrary to stereotypes about sexual performance and masculinity, men interviewed in a large international study reported that being seen as honorable, self-reliant and respected was more important to their idea of masculinity than being seen as attractive, sexually active or successful with women. The study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine included interviews with more than 27,000 randomly selected men from eight countries. "Many meanings, positive and negative, are attached to the term, 'masculinity,'" said Julia Heiman, director of The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University and an author of this study. "To ask a large sample of men what comprises their own sense of masculinity is very useful for both the media and for research. These results suggest we should pay attention and ask rather than presume we know." Complete Press release

New Study Examines Viagra© Treatment for Women

KI Director Dr. Julia Heiman is co-author of a new study examining the effects of sildenafil (Viagra©) treatment on women suffering sexual dysfunction associated with anti-depressants. The study showed significant gains in reaching orgasm and orgasm satisfaction for women receiving the sildenafil compared to women receiving a placebo. The women receiving sildenafil showed lesser gains in desire, arousal, and natural lubrication. The study was small in scope, and results were important but moderate. Previous studies of sildenafil treatment in other populations of women have not shown marked effects. The study is published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and is available online at the JAMA website >>
