Research Programs and Laboratories
The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences contains 14 well-equipped
laboratories for research in Auditory Sciences, Language Sciences, and
Speech and Voice Sciences.
Auditory Sciences
Departmental
research in auditory sciences focuses on the assessment and treatment
of human auditory disorders. Specific areas of research include factors
in the successful use of hearing aids, auditory problems of aging listeners,
cochlear mechanics, psychoacoustics, individual differences in auditory
capabilities in children and adults, and psychophysical studies of speech
perception.

Language Sciences
Research
in language sciences focuses on language acquisition, linguistic theory,
phonological development, bilingual language development, and aphasia
and other neurological disorders.
Language Laboratories
Speech and Voice Sciences
Research
in speech and voice sciences covers a wide range of topics, including
speech psychoacoustics, motoric and sensory factors in speech acquisition
and in neurologically-based speech disorders, and voice quality and
cognitive approaches to voice therapy.
