MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Thanks to all who volunteered their time and the use of their names to support our membership drive, we will launch our AAUP membership drive with a broadly-endorsed and persuasive letter, to be followed by in-person visits in specific departments. We are very grateful to colleagues who are willing to work with us in their departments. We will do all we can to see that your efforts pay off in a significant increase in AAUP membership. Please help the AAUP-IUB chapter to remain an effective influence on campus by encouraging your colleagues to join.

COMMITTEE A

Challenges to due process and fair treatment of faculty and graduate students continue. AAUP-IUB Committee A members Mike Grossberg and Ed Greenebaum are providing counsel and advocacy for a graduate student whose teaching contract was not renewed, for a faculty member in the College on a promotion and tenure issue, for a faculty member in a professional school on appropriate review procedures, and for librarians on administrative actions.

BLOOMINGTON FACULTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS

The AAUP-IUB chapter recruited and worked with departmental liaisons to develop a list of AAUP-endorsed candidates to run for BFC nomination. We are told that turnout for this first-ever electronic election was very poor, reportedly due at least in part to problems with the system. The elections themselves are now being held, again electronically. BFC and UITS report that problems with the nominations process have been worked out. We urge you to vote, and to consider the AAUP-endorsed candidates, named in a separate message from Julie Bobay. If you'd like a reminder of supported candidates, please contact Julie bobay@indiana.edu

HOUSE BILL 1380

If you haven't already done so, please contact state legislators to support House Bill 1380 to place elected faculty on governing boards of public universities. The Indiana AAUP Conference, who are spearheading this legislative effort, suggest the following talking points:

  • faculty are best positioned to give input regarding the quality and advisability of educational initiatives,
  • faculty are best positioned to uphold academic integrity and the primary mission of the university in times of fiscal discipline,
  • alumni and students already have guaranteed seats at the table. Faculty must be added as a matter of good governing and equity,
  • faculty have conceded a vote in the interest of dialogue.
