"Anna May Wong: In Her Own Words" A documentary film presentation by Yunah Hong

Description: This documentary presents a vivid picture of the first Chinese American movie star (1905-1961) - both an architect and a victim of her times. It had a world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea in October 2010, festival runs in the US and Asia, and is scheduled to broadcast on PBS Plus on May 2013 during the Asian American heritage month. The filmmaker will be in attendance to introduce the film and will be available for a Q&A session after the film showing.

Asian Cultures Around Campus presents "Holi Festival"

Description: Holi, one of the most festive holidays in India will be celebrated at IU at Dunn Meadow. Holi, the festival of colors is a day to dance, eat lots of delicious food, and throw colored powder to symbolize the coming of spring and bringing good harvests. Holi typically falls on the day after the first full moon in the month of March and is a day full of laughter and fun! For more questions please contact acc@indiana.edu. Southeast Asia Night

Description: A collaboration among the Filipino, Indonesian, Malaysian, Singaporean, Thai, and Vietnamese Student Associations, Southeast Asian Night will exhibit various Southeast Asian cultural heritage to the Bloomington community. The organizers hope to expand your cultural horizons through interacting with their members, participating in traditional performances, and enjoying delicious food.

Screening of "Danny in North Korea," presented in collaboration with Liberty in North Korea and Oxfam of IU

Every year thousands of North Koreans make the dangerous journey across the border to escape oppression and poverty. In March of 2005, Danny was one of them. He escaped a life of indoctrination, routine public executions, and starvation. He left his country in search for his mother who promised to return home once she found food and made money. After five months of waiting, Danny fled into China to find her. In 2007, with the help of LiNK, Danny arrived in the United States and began his new life. This is a documentary, DANNY FROM NORTH KOREA, about Danny's story -- from his challenging life in North Korea, his brave escape to China, and his resettlement journey in the United States. There will be an informal discussion following the screening.

In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Office of International Services is pleased to invite you to enjoy beautiful music performed by our guests, Yasuhiko Harada and Alber Chien. A native of Japan, Mr. Harada is a Doctor of Music candidate at the Jacobs School of Music majoring in early music and voice. Mr. Chien is Taiwanese-American and also a student at the Jacobs School of Music currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in piano performance. The duo will perform a number of pieces including Japanese songs. Please consider taking a break in the day and joining us! A light lunch will follow the performance. Free parking available at the upper level of the Jordan parking garage (please ask for a validation pass at the concert).

Screening of the Documentary "Tokyo Ainu"

Event Description - "Tokyo Ainu features the Ainu, an indigenous people of Japan, who are active in practicing and promoting their traditional cultures in a metropolitan environment away from their traditional homeland. Shedding a common assumption that all Ainu live in Hokkaido, the film captures the feelings, thoughts and aspirations of Ainu people who try to follow the Ainu way of life no matter where they live. A Q&A session on the documentary and more broadly on indigenous Ainu culture and people will be facilitated after the show."

Description: Born in Hong Kong and raised in New Jersey, Shu-Mei Chan is a clay-based installation artist who thinks of herself as a gatherer of moments. She has exhibited works in major cities across the U.S. and abroad. Chan received an MFA in ceramics from IU Bloomington in 2008 and has a BA in studio arts from Wesleyan University. She has also studied at the NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. The installation on display is inspired by a Chinese idiom that her mother used to hasten her children on chore days and is in homage to the ever-evasive Dust Bunny.

Los Musicos de Alfonso is made up of former and current students of the Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music, hailing primarily from the Early Music Institute. Formed in February 2013, they have joined together to learn about and share some of the music we love and love to perform with audiences in communities around Indiana. Deadline for Submission: Monday, April 22, 2013
Prizes: The first place winner will receive an iPad and trophy and 2 runner-ups will each receive a digital reader. Brief awards and reception will be held at the ACC on May 3 at 5 pm.
Essay topic: The theme for the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month this year is “Examining the Meanings of Home.” What do you consider home? How would you define home (e.g. a physical place, a person, an experience, etc)? All human beings, regardless of race and ethnicity, need to find a sense of belonging in their community and/or surroundings. Answer the questions above while connecting it to a personal experience of your own or of someone you know.
How to submit: Each entry should have two title pages: the first should include the title, author's name, permanent address, phone number, email address, and include: "Asian Pacific American Heritage Essay Contest." The second title page should include the title only. The author's name should not appear on the manuscript except on the first title page. All submissions should use a 12-point size in Times New Roman. It must be double-spaced and should not exceed 1,000 words. You may submit your entry by mail to ACC, 807 E. 10th Street, Bloomington, IN 47405, fax to (812) 856-5030, or email your entry in PDF format via acc@indiana.edu

Come and enjoy the diversity within Asian cultures through cultural performances, art crafts, and activities such as chopstick challenge, calligraphy, henna, and many more.
