This is the untold history of the 40-year legal fight to vindicate Korematsu, one that finally turned a civil injustice into a civil rights victory. Asian American Studies Program Speaker Series presents Professor Grace Kao
In cooperation with IU Asian Culture Center, Departments of History, Sociology, and English
Topic: "Perceptions of Social Support among Minority Immigrant Parents."
Date: Thursday, January 29
Time: 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Venue: Dogwood, Indiana Memorial Union
Description: Traditional assimilation paradigms argue that immigrants are particularly disadvantaged in feelings of marginality and dislocation. Given these paradigms, we explore how minority and immigrant status are associated with perceptions of support among parents of young children. We use the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study - Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K), a nationally representative sample of children in kindergarten in 1998-99. All groups of minority immigrant parents, compared to their native-born white counterparts, report lower levels of perceived social support, and this gap persists even when demographic and socioeconomic characteristics are held constant. Additionally, English language ability, but not years spent in the United States, attenuates the disadvantages that Hispanic immigrant parents face in their perceptions of social support. Finally, Hispanic parents report substantial variation in their perceptions of social support by ethnicity. As social support is an important predictor of parents' economic stability and children's well-being, these findings have important implications for children of immigrants, an important and increasing demographic group in the United States."

In 2009, it will be 10 years since the passing of Michi Weglyn, but her book based largely on government documents continues to be an important source of the truth about this grim subject.

Phil Nash, who has worked as a teacher, writer, community organizer, and lawyer will be presenting a talk on the life and contributions of Michi Weglyn, author of the “Years of Infamy: The Untold Story of Americas Concentration Camps.” Nash has been involved in civil rights issues for Asian Pacific Americans and others for over 30 years, starting with work as an attorney, strategist, speaker, and community organizer in the movement to redress the unjust incarceration of his family and other Japanese Americans during World War II. He went on to serve as Founding Executive Director of the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium (now the Asian American Justice Center), and worked as a staff attorney for the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), the Education Law Center, and District Council 37's Municipal Employees Legal Services Plan in New York City. Before coming to Maryland, Nash taught at the Urban Legal Studies Program at the City College of New York, Yale University, New York University, C.U.N.Y. Law School, and Georgetown University Law Center. He also co-founded a private diversity training company to address diversity, human resources, leadership, fundraising, organizational development and Asian American issues for corporations, government agencies, non-profits and universities.
