Grant Opportunity for Women of Color Organizations
Public Voices, Public Policy: Realizing the Power of Women of Color
Public Voices, Public Policy Initiative With the Public Voices Initiative, the Foundation seeks to promote dialogue among policy makers, service providers, community women, academia, those in philanthropy and other stakeholders to address current policy issues of concern to women of color. These efforts are aimed at promoting strategies to diversify the voices and leaders in public policy and to ensure that women of color and issues of concern to communities of color remain at the forefront of national, state and local policy agendas. The Ms. Foundation is actively seeking to support women of color led organizations engaged in public policy advocacy and action through general support grant funding, technical assistance, training and peer-to-peer opportunities. By providing these strategic resources, we seek to contribute to the sustainability and increased impact of women of color organizations and to new kinds of partnerships in public policy. Public Voices grantees will be substantially (staff, board, and constituency) comprised of women of color-led institutions and will reflect and be grounded in the community in which they work. Grantees will be engaged in political action directed towards local, state, tribal or federal level issue areas. We define political action broadly, to include multi-level grassroots organizing, and efforts to change behavior in government or systems, institutions, and communities. This may encompass everything from changing perceptions in public will and/or in the public policy debate around certain issues to changing laws, rules, and administrative practice. We would like grantees to be clear about how they see their impact and to define impact in their experience. Grantees will exhibit an intersectional analysis in their work, namely an understanding of how gender, race, class, immigration status, sexual orientation, language, disability or age oppressions are related to each other and can be experienced simultaneously. Groups should be able to show where they see innovation in their approaches and methodologies. Grantee organizations can be engaged in multi-issue or single-issue work since the goals of this Initiative are not issue specific, but are rather about broad issues of access and participation of women of color organizations in the public policy process. Grantee groups may or may not use a "traditional" gender lens in their approach. Preference will be given to applicants with a budget under $1 million, although organizations that fall outside of this range are encouraged to apply.
All grant desisions will be made by the Initiative's Steering
Committee, comprised of women of color activists and advocates who are
partners to the Foundation for this Initiative (see History section).
Criteria for Grants The Public Voices Initiative will begin with four to
eight one-year general operating grants of $35,000-$75,000 each. In
addition to general support grants, we will be providing peer-to-peer
networking and training opportunities for grantees. It is our intent
that we build a cadre of networked women of color leaders active in the
many dimensions of work that constitutes policy change and
implementation. Therefore as a part of receiving a grant, the Ms.
Foundation will be offering skills building and networking opportunities
that we hope grantees will prioritize for participation.

Subject: OCA Seeks Applicants for Summer Internship Program
For Immediate Release: February 23, 2007
Contact: Douglas Lee, Program Manager, dlee@ocanational.org
Washington, DC - OCA, a national Asian Pacific American organization
dedicated to ensuring social justice for APAs, is seeking motivated and
qualified students for its highly successful summer internship program.
The internship will last approximately ten weeks and a stipend will be
provided.
Summer interns will be placed at a federal agency, non-profit, or congressional office that matches their interest and work full-time. Interns can also be placed at the OCA National Center and work first hand with one of the largest APA organizations in the country. In addition to their placement, summer interns will be highly engaged in many OCA activities and be involved with grassroots organizing.
The OCA Summer Internship Program engages interns with numerous activities to bring to life all that Washington, DC has to offer. The summer brown bag series will inform and engage interns on important issues int he APA and civil rights community. In the past, we've met with Congressional Representatives, APA staffers, and members of the APA Congressional Caucus to inspire interns. We will also be continuing on the success of a collaborative effort on toolkits that interns will research and determine best practices on important APA college issues, such as hate crimes and bias, coalition, and Asian American Studies.
In addition to your time in Washington, DC, OCA will bring the interns to our annual national convention, the largest APA conference in the country, held in Sacramento, CA on June 28 - July 1, 2007. The convention will feature speakers, entertainment and engage the entire community on pertinent issues. Applicants are strongly encouraged to make sure they are able to attend this signature event.
