ACES (the Association of Central Eurasian Students) is devoted to providing a forum for Indiana University students interested in and/or studying any region within Central Eurasia. Central Eurasia is defined as the vast area and peoples of:

• The Mongolian plateau (Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, southern Siberia, Kalmyks)
• The Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas (Tibet, Ladakh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim
• The oases of Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uighurs)
• The Steppe Turks (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tatars, Bashkirs)
• Afghanistan and Iran
• Turkey and Azerbaijan
• The Finno-Ugric peoples (Hungary, Finland, Estonia)

ACES liaises between the students and Department of Central Eurasian Studies; establishes a forum to gain experience in organizing an international conference, and establish contacts with colleagues who share your interests. ACES is involved in a variety of important activities each year, including organizing an annual CES Conference and related activities every spring; representing graduate student interests to departmental faculty, regional centers on campus and the University; and planning social events.

2008 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

The Fifteenth Annual Central Eurasian Studies Conference will be held on March 22 and March 23, 2008 at Indiana University, Bloomington. The conference is organized and run by the Association of Central Eurasian Students (ACES), the graduate student association for the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University.

The conference will be held in Ballantine Hall on the Indiana University campus.

Panels and Presentations:

Each presenter will have 15-20 minutes for their presentation, followed by a chair-mediated question and answer session. All panels will be one hour and forty-five minutes long and will take place in Ballantine Hall (BH). Please see the conference program for all panel and room assignments. Please note that this schedule is subject to change. All changes will be posted in Ballantine Hall 008 on the day of the conference.  Computers and overhead projectors will be available for presentations.

Rooms, panel assignments and panel chairs will be posted and emailed by the end of March. Pre-organized panels will be retained as they were submitted.

Conference Program Information:

A conference program and booklet containing edited versions of all abstracts will be published and will be available at the conference. Abstracts will only be printed for those who are presenting at the conference. Full-length papers will not be printed.

Travel and Directions:

Bloomington is located approximately 50 miles south of Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Indianapolis International Airport is the closest commercial airport to Bloomington. The convenient Bloomington Shuttle service leaves the Indianapolis airport for Bloomington every two hours from the "Ground Transportation" area (round-trip cost US$50.00). Take the shuttle to the Indiana Memorial Union (on the campus of the university) or to one of the hotels on its route. You may find a shuttle schedule here: Airport Shuttle Schedule

Campus Parking:

Please note that most parking lots on campus require a parking sticker, and the university frequently checks and tickets illegally parked cars. Free parking is available on Saturday ans Sunday only in the Ballantine Hall lot. Please note that you may only park in spots which are not posted as 24-hour lots.  Free parking is also available 24 hours at Atwater parking garage, located at the intersection of Atwater and Faculty Streets. Pay parking is located at the Indiana Memorial Union, next to the conference location.

Walking directions from Atwater:
Walk north on Faculty Street to Third Street. You will see a big building directly across the street called Jordan Hall. Ballantine Hall is directly behind it. The conference will be held on the ground floor of Ballantine Hall.
