Summer Language Offerings

Swahili Level 1

June 3 - July 26, 2019
This intensive program provides beginners a solid introduction to Swahili. Students who complete the course successfully will complete the equivalent of the 1st-Year curriculum in the African Studies Program at Indiana University and will reach a proficiency of Intermediate Low or better. They will be able to communicate in day-to-day situations in Swahili, will be able to read and write effectively on familiar topics, and will have a solid foundation for further study or travel. The program introduces Swahili culture through work with authentic materials and media, as well as Swahili activities and structured interactions with Swahili speakers. Swahili Level 2

June 3 - July 26, 2019
This intensive program is for students who have elementary proficiency in Swahili and want to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Students who complete the course successfully complete the equivalent of the 2nd-Year curriculum in the African Studies Program at Indiana University and will reach a proficiency of Intermediate Mid or better. They will able to function effectively in a Swahili-speaking environment; will be able to understand and work with authentic materials, including news, videos, podcasts, chats, stories, articles on familiar topics, etc.; and will have a solid foundation for travel or advanced study. The program develops familiarity with Swahili culture through work with authentic materials and media, as well as activities conducted in Swahili and structured interactions with Swahili speakers.For more information on program features, eligibility, housing, funding, and application, please visit the HLS Language Workshop website.

STARTALK

June 5 - July 3, 2019
Middle and high school students (8th to 12th graders) in Bloomington, Bedford, and surrounding areas can learn the East African language of Swahili (Kiswahili) at Indiana University for proficiency and foreign language credit.
