African Studies - Graduate Student Directory

Since 1961, over 400 African Studies students have graduated with an Africa-focused Ph.D. African Studies students are enrolled in a range of different departments at Indiana University. Below is a current list of graduate students in African Studies, their departments, and contact information.

African Studies

Virginia Bunker
Virginia Bunker is in her second year of the African Studies M.A. She graduated from the University of Richmond with a B.A. in International Studies and minors in French and Cultural Anthropology. Before coming to Indiana University she coached track and field at her high school in Alexandria, Virginia, and interned with a local DC nonprofit organization to organize its Africa service initiative. Virginia is currently studying Twi and researching 'sport for development and peace' programs and discourse in Ghana.

Summer is currently writing her MA thesis on digital libraries in Ghana. She received her MLS from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2009 and is the History and Political Science Librarian and Coordinator of Government Documents at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. She also holds a BA in International Relations from Old Dominion University.

Jennifer Hart is a PhD Candidate in African History in the History Department. Jennifer received her M.A. in African History from Indiana University and is currently completing her PhD dissertation on the social and cultural history of urban transportation in late-colonial and postcolonial Accra, Ghana. Her other research interests include urban history, the history of Christianity and Islam, and comparative colonial history.

Chris is a PhD candidate in Linguistics focusing on syllable and moraic phonology and tonology in African languages, with an emphasis on Bamana. Chris received his M.A. in Linguistics from Indiana University and his Bachelors degrees from Florida State University in Saxophone Performance and Biochemistry. His other research interests include phonological paradigms, political discourse analysis, and functional language disorders.

Carolyn Holmes is a 3rd year graduate student, studying issues of transitional justice and legitimacy in South Africa. She received her BA in Political Science with a minor in African History from DePauw University in 2006. Working with issues that combine her regional focus and her interest in political philosophy, Carolyn's research involves the critical examination of post-colonial/third-world democracy. She is currently studying both isiZulu and Afrikaans as part of her research.
