AAADS students have many opportunities to pursue an active extracurricular life through the department. From social activism to mentoring to experimental theater, these activities can add another dimension to the student’s experience at Indiana University. AAADS Graduate Society
All MA students are members of this group, which meets several times each semester. The society’s purpose is to
bring students together for both social and academic camaraderie. From parties to special projects, the Graduate
Society gives each student a sense of home within the larger department.
AAADS Undergraduate Club
Undergraduates find this group to be a shelter in the whirlwind of college pressures. It is often a place where
academic interests are sharpened and brought into focus through interaction with other students of similar
interests. Through the club, undergraduates may connect with graduate students for advice and mentoring.
Black Curtain
Black Curtain was founded in January 2003 as a way for black students to perform work pertaining to the black
experience in America. Since then, they have grown, received many campus awards, including one from the dean
of students in 2005, and are a part of Bloomington Arts Week 2006. Black Curtain, a completely student-run group,
became affiliated with AAADS in fall 2005. Black Curtain hosts poetry open mics and has brought a number of

Black Graduate Student Association (Facebook)
This campuswide graduate organization supports African American students with an array of resources, not least of which is providing a voice on black and other issues.
Black Knowledge Bowl
Test your knowledge of black history, literature, science, music, and much more by joining the AAADS cadre for the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center’s annual Black Knowledge Bowl. Graduate students can act as coaches for the undergraduate teams.
Blacks Like Us
Organized through the IU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Office, this group provides special support for black GLBT students on the Bloomington campus.
Black Scholar Collective
These graduate-level scholars formed a collective to have greater power in improving academic access and bringing speakers of high intellectual caliber to campus. They have co-sponsored forums with AAADS. Contact BSC-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU to join listserv.
Black Student Union
Since 1976, this activist organization has had as its mission to educate others about the African American experience and culture, keeping social and educational projects underway to fulfill that mission.
