Upcoming AISA Events:

  • FNIU Pow-Wow Committee, November 29, 2001

    Message from Dr. Thomas:

This electronic mail message is sent to you as an invitation to become a volunteer member of the Pow Wow Committee on behalf of the First Nations at Indiana University (FNIU). This group is coming together to begin planning out a Native event on IU/Bloomington campus which is scheduled for the last weekend of March 2002.

The initial meeting will take place on November 29th, Thursday. It will start at 10:00 AM in the Graduate House, located at 803 East 8th Street, in Bloomington.

First, there are two speakers designated to give presentation. Both are not confirmed, but I am working on them. One is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, March 28th, at 1:00 PM, and the other person will give a public address at 10:00 AM on Friday morning.

The Pow Wow is currently scheduled for Friday evening (6:00 PM), March 29th and two grand entries (1 & 6 PM) on Saturday, March 30th.

In addition, FNIU is a new organization started Fall 2001 on IU/ Bloomington campus to serve as a resource program for any issues addressing American Indians, Alaska Native, Hawaiians, and Indigenous Peoples of the United States. Furthermore, the program is designed to assist in recruiting and retention of undergraduate and graduate Native students at IU. FNIU will be a focal point for Native cultural informational exchange for the university, community and Southern Indiana.

In the future, FNIU will assist in recruit for more Native faculty and staff. It will also serve as public relations between IU and the Native communities in the USA and Canada.

I hope you will help to launch these two new Native needs at Indiana University with your presence on the 29th of November initial meeting.

    --Wesley Thomas (Navajo)
