Each year the Society
for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas
sponsors a competition in which younger scholars submit
descriptive works written that year on American Indian
languages. The competition winner receives the Mary
R. Haas Award, named for the prominent linguist. It
recognizes and encourages the finest work in indigenous
American language studies based on significant field
work. This series was established to publish the award-winning
