Professor Bond received a B.S. from Michigan State University in 1966 (mathematics) and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1975 (psychology). He was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University in 1975 and on the faculty at Northwestern University Medical School (1977-1983). He joined IUPUI faculty in 1983. During the 1994-1995 academic year he was Visiting Professor at Dartmouth Medical School. From 1983 to 1997, he was the first director of the doctoral program in Clinical Rehabilitation Psychology, the first Ph.D. program on the Indianapolis campus outside the IU School of Medicine.
Professor Bond's research has focused on identifying effective rehabilitation approaches for people with severe mental illness. His research has centered on two areas: assertive community treatment, which is a comprehensive intensive case management approach for people with severe mental illness who also have other challenging problems, such as homelessness and substance abuse, and supported employment, which is an individualized approach to helping people attain competitive employment. Professor Bond has consulted throughout the United States and internationally.
Professor Bond has twice held Research Scientist Development
Award from the National Institute of Mental Health (1989-1994,
1996-2001). He also has received national research awards from the
American Psychological Association, the American Rehabilitation
Counseling Association, the International Association of Psychosocial
Rehabilitation Services, and the National Association of Case
Management. Over his career Professor Bond has been supported
continuously through external funding from federal grants, state
contracts, and private foundations.
