Professor Froehlich received a B.S. from the University of California in 1971, an M.S. in 1974 and a Ph.D. in 1978 from Syracuse University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Anatomy at the University of Oregon School of Medicine. She was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1985 and was appointed Associate Professor in 1992 and Full Professor in 1998. She holds joint appointments as Professor in the Departments of Cellular and Integrative Physiology and Medical Neurobiology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Professor Froehlich's research focuses on the hormonal, neurochemical, behavioral, and genetic factors that contribute to the development of alcoholism. She directs both preclinical and clinical studies on brain neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter systems that mediate many of the effects of alcohol such as euphoria, sedation, tolerance, and dependence. She also directs preclinical and clinical studies on the development of medications for the treatment of alcoholism.
Professor Froehlich is a Scientific Co-Director of the Indiana Alcohol
Research Center in the Indiana University School of Medicine. She has
served on the editorial board of national journals and as a member of
the Alcohol and Toxicology study section of the National Institutes of
Health. She has authored numerous papers, book chapters, and review
articles, has supervised more than forty graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows, and directs a national trainee workshop for the
National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Professor
Froehlich has served on numerous committees at the school, campus,
university, and national levels. As a member of campus and system-wide
faculty governance groups, she has acted as a liaison between the Indiana
University School of Medicine and other schools within the University
and has stimulated interdisciplinary research programs and has helped
to shape both undergraduate and graduate educational offerings and
research opportunities. She has served as Interim Vice Chancellor for
Research and Interim Associate Vice President for Research at Indiana
University-Purdue University at Indianapolis since 2005.
