Indiana University, Indianapolis
Professor Klaunig is the Robert B. Forney Professor and Director of Toxicology in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology as well as the Founding Director of the Center for Environmental Health and Associate Director of the Cancer Center at Indiana University. He also serves as the Program Director of the Molecular and Environmental Carcinogenesis Program for the Indiana University Cancer Center. He received his BS in Biology from Ursinus College, Collegeville Pa, and a Ph.D in Experimental Pathology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD. After postdoctoral studies in chemical carcinogenesis, he became an assistant professor and then associate professor in the Departments of Pathology and Pharmacology at the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, OH. Following a sabbatical year at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology he took the professorship at Indiana University in 1991.
Dr. Klaunig serves as a member of the USEPA Science Advisory Board. He has been a member and chair of several USEPA panels. Dr. Klaunig was a member of the original USEPA Cancer Risk Assessment Guidelines Committee and the USEPA Children's Health Cancer Risk Guideline Committee. He is also a member of the Board and the Executive Committee of the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI), and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Toxicology Forum. He has served as a Member of the NIH/NIEHS National Toxicology Program Board of Scientific Counselors. He is active in the Society of Toxicology, having served on elected and appointed committees over the past 16 years (President of the Carcinogenesis Specialty Section, President of the Ohio Valley Society of Toxicology, Member and Chair of the SOT Education Committee, Treasurer, and a member of the Executive Council of the Society of Toxicology).
Dr. Klaunig also served the State of Indiana as the Director of Toxicology and the State Toxicologist from 1991 to 2003 as well as service on the Indiana Pesticide Review Board and the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving. In 2002 he received the Kenneth P. DuBois Award from the Midwest Society of Toxicology Chapter. From Indiana University he has also received the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Distinguished Leadership Award and the Indiana University Board of Trustees' Teaching Excellence Award. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest award given to a citizen of the State of Indiana for service by Governor O'Bannon. He is board certified in toxicology and a Fellow in the Academy of Toxicological Sciences. He has published over 180 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters in toxicology, carcinogenesis, and risk assessment and has mentored over 40 MS, Ph.D., and postdoctoral fellows in Toxicology and Chemical Carcinogenesis. He has served as an Associate Editor of Toxicological Sciences and is currently the Editor in Chief of Toxicologic Pathology.
Dr. Klaunig's research interests are dedicated to understanding
the mechanisms of chemically induced carcinogenesis with emphasis on
the epigenetic (nongenotoxic) modes of action. This has involved
studies into the role of oxidative stress/oxidative damage, Kupffer
cell activation, modulation of cell to cell communication, cell
growth/apoptosis in this process, and understanding the multistage
nature of the cancer process. His research is supported by the NIH,
USEPA and non federal sources of support.
