Born in 1944 in South Bend, Indiana, Dr. Lemons then completed undergraduate training at Princeton followed by medical school at Northwestern University, residency in pediatrics at the University of Michigan, fellowship in fetal physiology and metabolism and neonatology at the University of Colorado, eventually joining the faculty at Indiana University in the Department of Pediatrics in 1978.
Dr. Lemons is the Hugh McK. Landon Professor of Pediatrics and the Director of the Section of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Lemons considers patient and family care of the highest priority in the Newborn Intensive Care environment. The Newborn Intensive Care program is one of the largest in the country, providing state-of-the-art care to 1700 newborn infants and families each year. This program is recognized nationally and participates in the cooperative Multicenter Network of Newborn intensive care units supported by the National Institutes of Health in clinical investigation.
Dr. Lemons has developed major basic research programs in the area of fetal and neonatal metabolism, as well as in clinical trials, supported by continuous NIH funding and other grant support over the past 25 years.
Dr. Lemons has served on numerous national committees, including Chair of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Perinatal Section, Chair of the Committee on Fetus and Newborn of the American Academy of Pediatrics Perinatal Section, as a member of NIH Study Sections, as an Examiner for the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Sub-Board of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has been active in numerous capacities for the University and the Medical School.
Dr. Lemons has published extensively in the field of fetal and
neonatal protein and energy metabolism as well as numerous other
clinical and educational topics. Medical and societal ethics
as they relate to children's issues are also an area of increasing
interest and importance to Dr. Lemons. Dr. Lemons and his wife,
Pam, have three children.
