Professor Ward received a B.A. degree in Anthropology form the University of Northern Colorado and both a Masters and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Medical and Oral Facial Genetics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, before joining the faculty of the Schools of Liberal Arts and Dentistry at IUPUI in 1985.
Professor Ward utilizes the tools and perspectives of biological anthropology to understand the patterned facial variation associated with congenital craniofacial defects. He has published widely in the medical literature on Cleft Lip and Palate and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. He has held joint appointments in Liberal Arts and Dentistry throughout his career. He has served as Chair of the Anthropology Department and Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Liberal Arts. In 2010-2011, Professor Ward served as Interim Dean of University College at IUPUI. He has been the Executive Director of the Center for Research and Learning at IUPUI since 2011.
Awarded the Frederic Bachman Lieber Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1993, Professor Ward was inducted into FACET in 1995. Professor Ward has twice been recognized for individualized mentoring. He received the IUPUI Center for Research and Learning, "Director’s Award" for mentoring in 2005 and the IUPUI Alvin S. Bynum Mentor Award in 2009. Professor Ward was named Chancellor’s Professor in 2012.
