C O U R S E D E S C R I P T I O N COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT: Mike Wade and I are offering a graduate seminar in the Spring on the contributions by W.D. Hamilton to evolutionary thinking. As part of the course, we will read and discuss The Narrow Roads of Gene Land, a compilation of Hamilton's key papers with prefaces to each. The class will also hold an International Symposium in tribute to Hamilton on the weekend of April 6th, 2001. The external speakers include: Marlene Zuk, Paul Schmid-Hempel, Andrew Read, and Steve Frank. Speakers from Indiana University include Michael Wade, Curt Lively, and Elisabeth Lloyd (History & Philosophy of Science). Topics will include levels of selection, kin selection in particular, and parasite-mediated selection for sex and mate choice. DISCUSSION FORMAT: Phase 1. Small, randomly assembled groups get together (drift, inbreeding). Phase 2. Intense discussions within groups lead to identification of and movement toward major ideas (45 mins). Phase 3. Exchange of ideas among groups. Connection between ideas. Spontaneous and brilliant presentations on the fly. Movement toward higher intellectual peaks (1-1.5 hours). Phase 4. Dissection of intersection of ideas by small groups (15 mins). Phase 5. Individual, personal digestion of ideas. One-page summary prepared for next meeting. INVITED GUEST SPEAKERS: Marlene Zuk (Biology Department, University of California-Riverside) INDIANA UNIVERSITY SPEAKERS: Michael J. Wade (Department of Biology) |
