The Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior (CISAB), the Department of Biology, and the Department of Psychology invite you to attend the 1996 Midwest Regional Animal Behavior Conference, to be held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on November 22-24. Conference organizers are Ellen Ketterson and Bill Timberlake, co-directors of CISAB.

c a l l   for   p a p e r s Abstracts are no longer being accepted.

Participants wishing to make an oral presentation should prepare a camera-ready, typed/printed abstract on the ABSTRACT FORM, following the format specified on the form. Abstract forms were mailed to ABS members (midwest region) in August. Due to the short duration of this meeting, presentations will be strictly limited to 12 minutes duration. A slide projector, overhead projector, and VHS video equipment will be provided; please indicate on the abstract from what is needed for your presentation.

Participants wishing to make a poster presentation should prepare a camera-ready, typed/printed abstract on the ABSTRACT FORM, following the format specified on the form. Poster participants should type (Poster) at the end of the abstract body.


d e a d l i n e s Registrations with an abstract must be postmarked by 25 October 1996.
Registrations for attendance only (no abstract) should be received no later than 1 November 1996.

c o n f e r e n c e  s i t e The conference will be held in the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. The IMU is the largest student union in the United States; it houses a 200 room hotel, meeting facilities, a wide range of food services, the IU bookstore, and a variety of other shops and services. IMU is centrally-located on campus, within walking distance of the IU Art Museum, the Lilly Library, the Mathers Museum of World Cultures, the Musical Arts Center, and many shops and restaurants of downtown Bloomington. Bloomington weather in November may be quite cold with snow possible. If you are not staying at the IMU Hotel, or plan to explore Bloomington and surroundings, dress warmly.

Checks must be issued in U.S. currency and drawn on a bank which does business in the U.S. Registration forms were mailed to ABS members (9-state midwest region) in August.

Indiana Memorial Union

h o u s i n g A block of hotel rooms has been reserved for the conference at the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) Hotel, and will be held until 8 November. While alternative housing is available, none are within easy walking distance of the conference site, and attendees wishing to stay outside the IMU must provide their own transportation. Questions regarding IMU conference housing should be directed to the Conference Registrar at 812-855-9824. Parking in two lots adjacent to the IMU is complimentary for IMU Hotel guests; conference attendees staying elsewhere receive 50% off parking. IU strives to provide a barrier-free environment for those with disabilities; if you need information about wheelchair access or have special needs, please contact the Conference Registrar at (812) 855-9824, and also indicate such on the registration form. The university has no child care facilities; a list of child-care providers will be furnished upon request.

Housing reservations with IMU may be made by contacting the IMU Hotel directly at 800-209-8145, or Star Travel can book your room as well as your airline reservation. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU), site of the conference. Rooms will be held for the conference only until November 8, so please make reservations before then. Housing rates are listed below (excluding 5% sales tax, 5% local hotel tax, after 6pm late arrival room guarantee charge):

Room for three persons: $80 to $98
Room for four persons: $88 to $106


m e a l s Continental breakfasts will be provided at the meeting on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Participants are responsible for their own lunches, and may select from a wide variety of food services within the IMU (cafeteria, pizza, sandwich shop, sweets shop), or a range of resturants and fast-food establishments just one or two blocks away, on Kirkwood Avenue.

t r a n s p o r t a t i o n  from  a i r p o r t Two limousine companies and one shuttle van service connect Bloomington and the Indianapolis International Airport (approximately 1 hour drive). Applicants may make arrangements directly or though Star Travel agency (phone numbers/rates for transportation services listed below). Connections to these services are made at the Ground Transportation Center at the airport, across the street from the baggage claim area.

m e e t i n g   h i g h l i g h t s Professor George Uetz will be offering a National Science Foundation (NSF) Workshop, to answer all your NSF-related questions.

The keynote speaker (following the banquet dinner) will be Dr. Barry Sinervo, Department of Biology and Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior, Indiana University. TOPIC: "Verhaltensphysiologie: Towards a Behavioral Physiological Understanding of the Rock-Paper-Scissors Game of Alternative Male Strategies"  Get acquainted with Dr. Sinervo's work: enjoy his on-line Java slideshow.

A special session on "Animal Movements across Landscapes: the Big Picture" is being organized by Pat Zollner and Dr. Stephen Lima, Department of Life Sciences, Indiana State University.
