D A R T P O I S O N F R O G (Dendrobates pumilio) GENUS NAME: Dendrobates SPECIES NAME: pumilio DIET: ants, termites, beetles, other small leaf litter arthropods. The Strawberry Dart Poison Frog is found in the Atlantic lowland tropical forests of Central America. This is a female frog with a tadpole on her back! Full-grown male poison dart frogs are only 2 cm (~3/4 of an inch) long. Their name comes from the fact that some native South Americans use the frogs' toxin to make poisoned darts for hunting. The poisonous secretions of the frog's skin helps deter predators from eating them, and the bright color lets the predator know that the frog is poisonous. Dart poison frogs fight to maintain their territories, and are very good parents. Photo compliments CISAB Faculty Member E.D. (Butch) Brodie III. READ MORE |
