N E U R O N

This is a graphic tracing of a real neuron from the frontal cortex of the brain. The oval in the middle is the cell body or SOMA. Neurons communicate with each other by an electrochemical process. DENDRITES (in pink, blue & green) are the branched part of the nerve cell that receives impulses. The AXON (in orange, pointing down) carries information to other neurons.

How big are neurons? While the soma of a neuron can be quite small (between 5-80 microns), the dendrites can extend hundreds of microns. One MICRON = one thousandth of a millimeter (1 mm is about 4/100s of an inch), so even this neuron at 100 microns is still so small that you need a microscope to see it.

The computerized instrument that generated this image is called Neurolucida. Scientists use this system to visualize and analyze 3-dimensional data using real neurons. To see this neuron rotating around an axis, move your cursor over the image below. Images courtesy of Dr. Dale Sengelaub.
