Moose are the largest members of the deer family. They can be as tall as 7.5 feet (2.5 meters). Males are larger than females. Bull moose weigh between 900-1,400 pounds (400-635 kg); cows weigh between 700-1,100 pounds (315-500 kg). They live in Alaska, most of Canada, and parts of the US (Maine, Minnesota, Isle Royale, and Rocky Mt. states to Colorado and Utah). Their habitat includes spruce forests, swamps, aspen and willow thickets. Moose are migratory. They feed near streams and lakes. Moose can swim as fast as 6mph (10 km/h) in water. On land, they can run up to 35 mph (55 km/h). Moose have poor eyesight but their senses of hearing and smell are excellent. Be careful around a female moose with a calf and around bull moose during the fall rutting season, as moose can be dangerous during these times. They mate in the fall and females produce 1-2 calves (twins are common), between late-May and early June. The main predators of moose are wolves, grizzly bear, and cougar. Similar species include Elk (they don't have the huge muzzle that moose have). NOTE: In Europe, the species Americans call "moose" are referred to as "elk". READ MORE ABOUT ANIMALS |
