GENUS NAME:   Sus
SPECIES NAME:   domesticus
DIET:   omnivorous; commercial feed may contain: corn, soybean meal, wheat, sorghum, milo, barley, oats

Pigs were domesticated from wild pigs (Sue scrofa). Adult domestic pigs average weight varies between 90 to 260 pounds (40.8-118 kg).   Pigs have a keen sense of smell and are highly intelligent.   In parts of Europe, pigs are trained to hunt truffles (an edible fungus that grows underground).   The lifespan of a domestic pig is 10 to 15 years; wild pigs can live up to 25 years or more.   Female pigs (sows) typically farrow a litter of 6 to 15 piglets, twice a year.   Pigs can run up to 11 mph (17.7 km/h).   Be careful around adult swine -- they can move quickly and are dangerous in certain situations:   A sow protective of her offspring may attack if she percieves you as a threat, a boar may bite or slash with his tusks if he perceives you as a threat to his sows, and a person who has been knocked down by feeder hogs pushing and shoving around a trough can be trampled.
