| WHAT IS A COPYRIGHT? |
| A copyright is
a form of legal protection under United States law (Title 17, U.S. Code) to authors for "original works" -- these include artwork, literary work, film, sound recordings, photographs, etc. The owner of the copyright has the exclusive right (and can authorize others) to reproduce this work (Section 106, 1976 Copyright Act).
The doctrine of "Fair Use" (Section 107, 1976 Copyright Act) allows critics, reviewers, educators to use bits of work (giving reference to the source) under certain conditions. If you want to learn more about copyright law, go to the United States Copyright Office web site. IU's Copyright Management Center has information useful for educators, beyond the Indiana University Copyright Statement. Stanford University also maintains a useful resource page concerning Fair Use. |
| CAN I SNAG A MOVIE OR PHOTO? |
| If you want to
snag (copy for your own use) one of CISAB's photos or movies or sound files, you should first ask our permission. None of our copyright materials may be reproduced on other web pages or used for commercial purposes without prior written permission. If you want to use a photo or sound file or movie for educational purposes, where you do not publish on a web page or print multiple copies, we are happy for you to do so -- the only thing we ask is that you give us credit by citing our web page and copyright notice. This means that you can use a photo for a school report, but you may not post the photo on your web page without our permission. |
| HOW TO CITE COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL |
