Dr. Machado is interested in the principles of learning in animals and humans. He is currently studying three topics: choice, timing, and behavioral variability. What variables determine how animals allocate their responses across alternatives? Past research has emphasized static descriptions of choice (e.g., the matching law), but Dr. Machado investigates primarily the behavioral processes underlying choice. In a similar vein, he also asks how animals learn to regulate their behavior when something important in their environment (e.g., food) occurs periodically or quasti-periodically. Finally, he also studies how animals learn to display highly variable, unpredictable, random-like behavior. His laboratory uses standard operant conditioning equipment and pigeons as animal subjects. Dr. Machado also develops mathematical models as a means to test our current understanding of learning principles. His other interests include developmental psychology, epistemology, and philosophical aspects related to behaviorism.
