Dr. Steinmetz's research interests include the study of the neural substrates of simple learning and memory such as the brain systems involved in classical conditioning and signalled instrumental conditioning. His current research involves many levels of analyses including studies of (1) cellular, synaptic, and network neural processes involved in acquisition and performance of simple learning, (2) similarities and differences in brain structures and systems involved in appetitive and aversive learning, (3) influences of emotion of brain activity associated with learning, and (4) behavioral and neural correlates of simple learning and memory in humans. He is also interested in the development and use of computational and network models inspired and constrained by known neural systems involved in behavioral and psychological functions.
