ABSTRACT:I critique notions guiding much of the recent work on traditions and social learning in nonhuman animals, commenting on logical and interpretive problems. I suggest an alternative framework to guide empirical (field and experimental) studies of social learning. The alternative framework promotes understanding traditions as biological phenomena with evolutionary significance for many species. RELATED READING
