ABSTRACT:Using behavioral, molecular, anatomical, and electrophysiological levels of analysis, here I will describe the brain structures that have evolved in vocal learning birds (parrots, hummingbirds, and songbirds), their possible independent gains, or independent losses in vocal non-learning species, and their known functions. I will further describe their possible evolution in mammals, and the relationship bird vocal learning brain pathways with human language brain pathways. RELATED READING
