Sorting Out the Units of Selection

ABSTRACT:After a brief introductory comment about Hamilton's work, I shall present a series of distinctions which can help sort out some of the many misunderstandings that occur regarding units and levels of selection. I differentiate four distinct questions. all of which have been regarded as *the* units of selection problem. I argue that this has led to confusion and talking at cross-purposes. This discussion involves redescribing the work of Maynard Smith, Dawkins, Wade, Sober and Wilson, Lewontin, and others. My conclusion shall be that each of these questions is valid in its own right, but that some of the problems need to be re-named. RELATED READING ONLINE RESOURCES:
