Sorting Out the Units of Selection

Lecture for Spring 2001 Graduate Seminar:   Interdisciplinary Seminar in Animal Behavior | International Hamilton Symposium

ABSTRACT: After a brief introductory comment about Hamilton's work, I shall present a series of distinctions which can help sort out some of the many misunderstandings that occur regarding units and levels of selection. I differentiate four distinct questions. all of which have been regarded as *the* units of selection problem. I argue that this has led to confusion and talking at cross-purposes. This discussion involves redescribing the work of Maynard Smith, Dawkins, Wade, Sober and Wilson, Lewontin, and others.
