How Drosophila Males Make Eggs: It's Elemental  video
20 October Guest Lecture for Fall 2000 Graduate Seminar:
Behavioral Ecology

© 2000 CISAB ABSTRACT:
Oogenesis in Drosophila requires a significant amount of phosphorus (P). Oocytes mature in follicles each of which contains 15 highly polyploid transcriptionally active chromosomes. The demand for P is met, in part, from the male's ejaculate following mating. Females incorporate 32P from radiolabeled males into their ovaries, specifically into their nucleic acids. The mechanism by which P uptake from the reproductive tract occurs must differ from that by which proteins are transferred, as P uptake is observed in species not showing female incorporation of ejaculate proteins.
