Lydia Garver email: LGARVER advisor: Pyburn year: 02 |
Research Interests: historical archaeology, White religious and ethnic differences in Colonial America, Pennsylvania Germans, archaeological ethics, public archaeology, undergraduate education and training I am a P.h.D. candidate in the Archaeology and Social Context Program and a Women and Science Fellow. My dissertation research aims to recognize white religious and ethnic diversity during the American colonial period and consider the implications of such diversity for social and political relations in the past and present. My primary interest is in early German immigrants to southeastern Pennsylvania. I am from Lancaster County, PA, and my work focuses on a local 18th century religious community known as Ephrata. Ephrata was made up of celibate members, who lived communally at a centralized location with the community's founder, and married members, who attended the community's religious services but lived on farms in the surrounding countryside. My research focuses on the homestead of one of these married member families. As the site I am conducting my research on is on private property, I am also very interested in public archaeology and the promotion of cultural resource conservation among private landowners. Member of the Center for Archaeology in the Public Interest (C.A.P.I.) |
