Research Interests: My research focuses on Navajo Christianity: unique in its lack of emphasis on denominations (even Methodist Navajos worship like Pentecostals), but also characterized by a strong Fundamentalist bent which eschews the use of any kind of traditional religious practices or beliefs. Thus, the use of African American Gospel tunes translated into Navajo language is preferred to new compositions by Anglo missionaries which remind Navajo believers and pastors of "medicine man chant." I am interested in exploring the implications of the religious situation for issues of identity and culture change. Specifically, I will analyze the tent revival context (central to the practice of Christianity among the Navajo) as a performance context in which a specific kind of Navajo and a Christian identity is negotiated by participants.
