Eta Sigma Gamma National Honor Award

The Department of Applied Health Science received the 2002 National Honor Award from Eta Sigma Gamma, a national health education honorary society. David Gallahue, Dean of HPER, and Mohammad Torabi, Department Chair, received the highest honor from the society on behalf of the department at the its annual conference in North Carolina on October 4, 2002.

The Department of Applied Health Science is committed to preventing disease and promoting the health and well being of individuals, families, and communities through research, teaching, and service related to healthy lifestyles. Prevention of health problems has become increasingly important in our society and our Department's mission is futuristic in responding to this growing need. Our Department offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees in various areas of applied health science.

At the undergraduate level we offer a curriculum in a number of exciting areas including: Dietetics, Health Education - Secondary Teacher Preparation, Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition Science, Public Health Education, and Safety Science. In addition, we offer a Certificate Program in Safety Management. Our dietetics program is accredited by the American Dietetic Association.

At the masters level, we offer the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Community Health Education as well as the Master of Science degrees in Health Promotion, Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition Science, Safety Management, and School and College Health Programs. Our MPH program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.

At the doctoral level, we have been offering a doctorate degree for over 50 years in the areas of health and safety education and health behavior.

We are among very few departments of its kind in the nation with the doctorate program ranked # 1 as well as an MPH program ranked # 11 nationally. The department also received the National Honor Award from the Eta Sigma Gamma, a national health education honorary society. These accomplishments are due to highly accomplished faculty, quality students, alums, and highly competent staff.

Our Commitment to Research

Time magazine named Indiana University - Bloomington College of the Year among Research Universities. The Department of Applied Health Science has a long-standing commitment to scholarly inquiry in a broad spectrum of areas emphasizing prevention and promotion of health problems. Research and creative activity in the department includes both basic and applied work in program planning and development, evaluation of the effectiveness of instruction, examination of lifestyle and health behavior in relation to nutrition, exercise, stress, alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse, individual development and family health, communicable disease, human sexuality, and related areas. In addition to research projects, faculty members engage in a variety of other scholarly activities, including the preparation of articles, textbooks, and other publications. Faculty are frequently asked to present scholarly papers at regional, national, and international conferences. In addition, the department recently received the 2002 National Honor Award from the Eta Sigma Gamma, a national health education honorary society.
