  • 2002 fall - The Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction has awarded a $1,145,930 renewal contract to William J. Bailey to operate the Indiana Prevention Resource Center for the fiscal year 2002.
  • 2002 fall - Noy Kay has presented a paper titled "Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Among College Students: U.S.A. and Taiwan" at the 44th International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance World Congress.
  • 2002 fall - Catherine Sherwood-Puzzello has made a presentation at the third annual Conference on Infant and Toddler Mental Health in Indianapolis.
  • 2002 fall - Graham Watts is collaborating on an analysis of social indicators for the treatment needs for abusers of alcohol and other drugs.
  • 2002 fall - William Yarber has received a grant of $246,250 for the second year of the five-year project for the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • 2002 fall - Catherine Sherwood-Puzzello and Michael Reece are directing the evaluation of the three-year, community-based project in Washington County, a pilot federal program to improve health care education and access for the Amish, Mennonites and other target populations in a southern Indiana county. The Rural Health Outreach Program is receiving $200,000 annually as one of 13 Rural Health Outreach Grant recipients in the United States. The program involves a partnership with Hoosier Uplands, Washington County Memorial Hospital, and the Washington County Health Department. IU News Release
  • 2002 fall - Michael Reece has been selected and showcased in the "Stories of IMPACT," the Community Health Scholars Program. This is quite an honor for Dr. Reece and our Department as he brings recognition to our public health program and the Department.
  • 2002 fall - William L. Yarber is the principal author of the national study of 1130 sexually experienced rural adolescents who participated in the 1999 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The project was funded by the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention. The survey findings were published in the current issue of American Journal of Health Education as the first study identifying the associations between initiation sexual activity at an early age and the markedly greater risk of engaging in subsequent sexual risk behaviors among a nationally representative sample of rural adolescents.   • 2002 spring - William Bailey and IPRC are investing nearly $50,000 in datasets useful in prevention planning. This project has been in development for the last ten years, and incorporates powerful statistical and mapping software products that allow for SPATIAL ANALYSIS of various types of data. The new Geographic Information System and the new PREV-STAT: Prevention Statistical Analysis Tool will be unveiled at a workshop on May 10, 2002. If interested, please RSVP at 855-1237.
  • 2002 spring - William L. Yarber is the featured speaker to the 2001/02 Kinsey Institute series of Gender Studies Research Workshops on March 27. He reports on current findings from the Rural HIV Prevention Center's work on risk behaviors in youth and young adults. His presentation is entitled "Differences in Condom Use Errors Among College Women and Men."
  • 2002 spring - Ruth Engs is just completing an extensive manuscript entitled A Historical Dictionary of the Progressive Era's Health Reform Movements. It will be published this fall by Greenwood Publishing. This new work follows her earlier book, Clean Living Movements: American Cycles of Health Reform (2000). Dr. Engs plans further publication in this area, testing the hypothesis that a linkage existed between health reformers and moral-health reform crusades of the progressive era (1890-1920. She has also co-authored a forthcoming article with David Hanson on the association of drinking patterns and forced sexual behavior.
  • 2002 spring - Michael Reece is working on the project of "Evaluation of the GA Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Minority Psychosocial Services Program (GA CHAMPS)." This 5-year project (2001-2006) involves the comprehensive evaluation of a federally funded program to increase engagement of African American and Latino/a individuals living with HIV in to a system of mental health care in two areas of Georgia: 1) inner-city Atlanta, and 2) a 10 county rural area along the eastern Georgia coast.
  • 2002 spring - Catherine Sherwood-Puzzello, Michael Reece, & Tania Basta are working on the project of "Evaluation of the Washington County Rural Health Outreach Program." This 3-year project involves the comprehensive evaluation of a federally funded program to identify and respond to the primary care and health education needs of the Amish and Mennonite communities of Washington County, Indiana.
  • 2002 spring - Michael Reece is working on the project of "HIV Prevention among Rural African American Women." In conjunction with the evaluation of an HIV prevention program for African American women in rural southern Georgia, this project seeks to identify appropriate mechanisms for the delivery of HIV prevention programs for this population.
  • 2002 spring - Michael Reece, Sala Cole, Laura McCormick, & Shannon Griffin-Blake are working on the project of "Multicultural Attitudes and Professional Expectations of Health Education Students." This Internet-based study will explore the multicultural attitudes of pre-professional health education students and the extent to which those attitudes are associated with the professional expectations and aspirations. Data will be collected from 1,200 undergraduate and graduate health education students enrolled at one of 20 universities across the country.
  • 2002 spring - Michael Reece and Brian Dodge are working on the project of "Sexual Compulsivity and Heterosexual Young Adults." The purpose of this study is to assess: 1) the psychometric properties of the Sexual Compulsivity Scale among a population with which it has not previously been used, and 2) to develop an understanding of associations between sexual compulsivity and sexual behaviors of heterosexual young adults.
  • 2002 spring - Michael Reece and Brian Dodge are working on the project of "Public Sex Behaviors of Male College Students." This study examines the role that public sex behaviors play in the sexual development of young adult males. Research questions also include exploring the extent to which these sexual behaviors area associated with sexual compulsivity and understanding the socio-behavioral and situational variables associated with safer sex behaviors in these environments.
  • 2002 spring - Michael Reece and Catherine Sherwood-Puzzello are working on the project of "Sexual Health Education: Exploring the Role of the Adult Sex Industry." By collecting data from a random national sample of adult sex industry employees this study will seek to answer questions such as: "Do employees of the adult sex industry have an important role to play in educating their customers about sexual health?" and "Do they need additional training on sexual health issues in order to maximize their opportunity to help consumers make informed decisions about sexual products?"
  • 2002 spring - Matt Smith is working on a project sponsored by Michael Reece: The Internet and Sexual Health Research. This project, funded by an Indiana University Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Award, will explore mechanisms for enhancing the utility of the Internet as a tool for sexual health research.
  • 2002 spring - Noy Kay is appointed as a committee member of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to develop advanced professional standards for health education teachers of students ages 11 to 18+.
