  • 2004 fall - Lloyd Kolbe was appointed by the National Academies, Institute of Medicine, to a second committee: the Committee on Food Marketing and the Diets of Children and Youth.
  • 2004 fall - David Lohrmann has met with school health educators from around the globe to found the International School Health Network. Working through the IUHPE, this network will facilitate exchange of school health research and programming worldwide.
  • 2004 fall - David Lohrmann presented workshops on "Process Index and Portfolios" and "Behavioral Marketing" at the American Cancer Society Coordinated School Health Program Urban Institute in New Orleans and a workshop entitled "Evaluation for CSHP Improvement" at the New England CSHP Leadership Institute in Hartford, CT.
  • 2004 fall - David Lohrmann facilitated an all-day workshop entitled "Healthy School Report Card 1st Steps in Planning" for teams from ten Indiana school corporations and eight Michigan school districts during the Michiana Coordinated School Health Leadership Institute held in Kalamazoo.
  • 2004 fall - David Lohrmann presented "The ASCD Healthy School Report Card" during the 11th Annual Summer Institute of the American School Health Association held at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, MA.
  • 2004 fall - Noy S. Kay presented a paper entitled, "School Policy and Environment: Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand," at the American School Health Association Conference, which was held October 13-16, 2004, in Pittsburgh.
  • 2004 fall - The Indiana Prevention Resource Center's annual Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use (2004) survey revealed that for the most part, Hoosiers can celebrate reduced consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by their children and adolescent population. However, rates in most categories remain higher than the national average. Thus, our prevention efforts are still crucial.
  • 2004 fall - The Indiana Prevention Resource Center's Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana has continued to offer healthy and engaging activities between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 P.M., when youth are more susceptible to experimenting with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. From 1997 through 2003, approximately 500 Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana programs were offered, serving over 55,000 middle school youth.
  • 2004 fall - The Indiana Prevention Resource Center helps administer the Tobacco Retailer Inspection Program (TRIP), a statewide tobacco retail compliance and enforcement program funded by the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Agency and the Indiana State Excise Police. Since 2000, TRIP teams have conducted over 25,000 retail inspections, achieving a non-compliance rate of 13.6% for 2003 (compared to 40.9% in 2000.
  • 2004 fall - Nancy Ellis and Kathryn Coffey presented their study: "Survey of Infertility Awareness and Prevention in Female Students in a Large Midwestern University" at SOPHE on Nov. 5, 2004.
  • 2004 fall - Millicent E. Fleming-Moran presented her study: "Public school environments and obesity: Indiana legislative responses to growing challenges and youth obesity disparities" at 2004 APHA annual meeting.
  • 2004 fall - Michael Reece, Stephen E. Karpiak, Amanda Tanner, and Kate Coffey presented their study: "HIV service provider stigma: Its existence and associations with provider characteristic" at 2004 APHA annual meeting.
  • 2004 fall - Desiree Goetze, Barbara Seitz de Martinez, and Muralikrishna Tangirala presented their study: "Applications of GIS to youth access to tobacco and meth lab issues in a context of interagency collaboration" at 2004 APHA annual meeting.

  • 2004 fall - Dr. Michael Reece and Kim McBride are co-investigating "Sexual Compulsivity: A Study of Measurement in Sexual Health." This study will assess the psychometric properties of three of the most widely used scales for measuring sexual compulsivity.
  • 2004 fall - Dr. Michael Reece and Amanda Tanner are conducting a research project entitled: "An Ecological Assessment of Sexuality Education in Indiana's Public Schools." This study seeks to identify some of the issues that Indiana Public School personnel face in discussing sensitive topics with their students.

  • 2004 spring - In early 2003, Dr. Michael Reece, led a team of faculty and three public health graduate students to Kenya to meet with leadership of the Moi University School of Public Health. Drs. Michael Reece and Joan Henkle, along with students Jarret Thompson, Dr. David Everetts, and Brandon Eggleston packed their laptops and headed for Eldoret. The primary purpose of the trip was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the potential for a collaborative research and teaching partnership between Moi University and the public health programs of Indiana University. In July 2004, Dr. Reece will be leading three of the department's graduate students back to Kenya. The team's activities this summer will include teaching a graduate course on public health program management, working closely with Kenyans to develop an evaluation component for an existing psychosocial support intervention, and mentoring Kenyan MPH students on the development of their protocols for thesis research. Individuals interested in supporting the Department's work there can make a financial contribution that will be used to support student travel and supplies. Interested individuals can contact Dr. Reece by email for information on how to make such a contribution.
  • 2004 spring - Dr. Carole Nowicke presented a convocation series event for the School of Music, Western Michigan University entitled "There's More to Inquiry than Google Or: I Have Fun with Research and You Can Too-Using Historical Materials for Performance, Pedagogy, and Publication."
  • 2004 spring - Drs. Mary Shaw-Perry, Lisako Jones-McKyer, and Cecilia Obeng assisted the Indiana Minority Health Coalition with the 2004 Racial/Ethnic Minority Community Needs Assessment study during the first week in April to identify barriers to the delivery of quality care to minorities living in Monroe County.
  • 2004 spring - Dr. Mary Shaw-Perry and Charlotte Horner, B.S., MPH student, have had a poster presentation at the 9th Biennial Symposium on Minorities and the Medically Underserved & Cancer (Sponsored by the Intercultural Cancer Council and Baylor College of Medicine) in Washington, D.C. entitled "Quality of Life Community Needs Assessment for African American Breast Cancer Survivors."
  • 2004 spring - Dr. Mary Shaw-Perry will be the keynote speaker for the Faculty Development Conference of the Mountain Plains AIDS Education and Training Center (University of Colorado Health Science Center) on Aug. 6. The plenary session presentation is entitled: "If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand: Characteristics of Teaching in a Student-Centered Learning Environment."
  • 2004 spring - Dr. Lohrmann has presented two papers this spring: "Introducing the Healthy School Report Card" with T. Lewallen at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development in New Orleans and "Health Promoting School Report Card" at the 18th World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education in Melbourne, Australia.
  • 2004 spring - Dr. Dong-Chul Seo has authored or co-authored five articles this year, three of them relating to the aftermath of 9/11. The other articles are "Alternate Forms of Health Attitude Scale" in the American Journal of Health Behavior and "Motor Vehicle Safety Scale for Young Drivers" in the American Journal of Health Studies.
  • 2004 spring - Dr. Ruth Engs, emeritus faculty, has authored five historical articles in Alcohol and Temperance in Modern History: An International Encyclopedia (ABC-CLIO, 2003).
  • 2004 spring - Our faculty and staff, through our Centers and Institute collectively have generated over $1.6 million dollars in grants and contracts during this year.
  • 2004 spring - Mohammad Torabi and Dong-Chul Seo were the co-authors of the paper entitled "Alternate forms of health attitude scale" which has been published in the March/April 2004 issue of American Journal of Health Behavior.
  • 2004 spring - Michael Reece is currently conducting work on the psychological impact of HIV infection and the mental health related systems of care that are available for individuals living with HIV. Most of his work in this area is based on a range of community-based participatory research projects being conducted in collaboration with Positive Impact Inc. The foundation of this work includes a five year project, funded by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), that is investigating the development of minority-focused systems of delivering mental health care to African-American and Latino individuals.
  • 2004 spring - Michael Reece's manuscript, "HIV-related mental health care: Factors influencing dropout among low-income, HIV-positive individuals," has been published in the October 2003 issue of AIDS Care.
  • 2004 spring - Dominic Cooper has been quoted by an Indianapolis Star article on Feb. 26, 2004, "Quarry has promise for life science work; Underground greenhouse is entrepreneur's vision of biotech lab of future."
  • 2004 spring - Carole Nowicke presented "William J. Bell: An Overview of His Life and Career" at the Midwest Regional Conference and the Southwest Regional Conference of the Tuba Euphonium Association. She also presented "Sounds and Visions: Glass Plate Images from the Legacy of Cornet Soloist Walter F. Smith" at the 2003 conference of the International Trumpet Guild. Carole is the Historian of the International Tuba- Euphonium Association and has spent the last two years conducting over 35 oral histories with tuba and euphonium players.
  • 2004 spring - Catherine Sherwood-Puzzello, Michael Reece, and our MPH graduate, Tania Basta, presented the paper: "Improving the health of the Amish and the elderly: Documenting the outcomes of a community- academic partnership in rural America" at the 131st annual APHA meeting (November 15-19, 2003) in San Francisco. They have also presented at Indiana Public Health Association and the Rural Health Association annual conferences in 2003.
  • 2004 spring - David Lohrmann is coauthor of an article entitled "Condom availability programs in Massachusetts High Schools: Relationships with condom use and sexual behavior" published in the June 2003 edition of the American Journal of Public Health.
  • 2004 spring - David Lohrmann has provided two presentations on evaluation at sessions of the American Cancer Society School Health Urban Institute: "Evaluating School Health Programs" (March 2003) and "Process Evaluation's relationship to Program Planning and Management" (July 2003).
  • 2004 spring - David Lohrmann is working with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development on a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation sponsored project to develop a "Healthy School Report Card."
  • 2004 spring - Lisako Jones-McKyer and her colleagues at the Indiana Prevention Resource Center published results from the 13th annual Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use (ATOD) Survey in August. This survey, funded in part by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, included the largest sample size ever for 2003. The staff, including several graduate students from the department, processed surveys from 151,398 youth representing 450 schools statewide. Staff members included: Mi Kyung Jun, Matthew Lee Smith, Swati Raychowdhury, Robin Milhausen, Susan Samuel, Maurali Tangirala, Ravi Ayachitam, Thipaphone Panyanouvong, Krisha Thiagarajah, Cindy Flynn and Jonathan Agley. The results are viewable at the IPRC website.
  • 2004 spring - Lisako Jones-McKyer conducted Data Interpretation Workshops across the state in October for school health educators and administrators. The workshops (held at IU Kokomo and IU Bloomington) were designed to help school staff understand and interpret the local reports they received from their participation in the ATOD Survey. The findings are used as needs assessment tools, as well as to help schools secure funding for drug prevention programs. Co-facilitators were doctoral students Mi Kyung Jun and Swati Raychowdhury, and MPH Intern Maurali (Krishna) Tangirala, and IPRC staff Susan Samuel.
  • 2004 spring - Lisako Jones-McKyer and her colleague IU Visiting Scholar Dr. Mika Omori of Kyoto University of Education were awarded three years of funding by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for their study on cultural and environmental factors contributing to the formation of adolescent health-endangering behaviors. The project goals are to identify and compare common and disparate cultural and environmental factors associated with adolescent health risk behaviors, including tobacco (smoking) and alcohol use. Targeted populations include school-age youth in Japan and in the United States. Data collection in the U.S. will take place next spring. Dr. Jo-Mc will travel to Japan next fall for the Japanese data collection phase.
  • 2004 spring - Alyce Fly was on sabbatical this past fall semester working on a nutrition and physical activity intervention in the public schools, funded by the Indiana Department of Health, assisted by a number of our current students, graduate student, Kaman Lo, Angela Leone, and undergraduate students Amy Siegal, Elia Figueora, Alex Kohler, Abby Moberly, Cara Johnston. She is also working with the Indiana Department of Education to evaluate USDA-funded Pilot Fruit and Vegetable Project in 25 Indiana schools, assisted by graduate student Krisha Thiagarajah.
  • 2004 spring - Alyce Fly traveled to University of Minnesota with four of our students (grads: Ka-man Lo, Angela Leone, Yeon Bai, and undergrad: Amy Siegal) for training on the Nutrition Data System software for conducting 24 hour recalls using the multiple pass approach.
