  • 2006 fall - Debby Herbenick and Michael Reece direct research related to the sexual health education opportunities available through adult book stores, Web sites and in-home parties.
  • 2006 fall - AHS professor William L. Yarber, AHS alumni Kimberly McBride and Robin R. Milhausen, and other researchers from Kinsey Institute conduct a condom - erection-loss study to identify possible path to risky behavior. The study will appear in the November issue of Sexual Health.
  • 2006 summer - July 24 Inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick! article, "Study: Obesity on The Rise; Link to Serious Health Problems," quoted Dong-Chul Seo and Mohammad Torabi.
  • 2006 summer - Catherine Sherwood gave a poster presentation at American College Health Association conference in New York, June, 2006, with graduate students Scott Butler and Rose Hartzell entitled “Peer Educator’s Self Performance Assessment.”
  • 2006 summer - Michael Reece and his graduate students have continued to work toward the development of a research agenda to complement the work of IU’s program s in Kenya, the Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS (AMPATH).
  • 2006 summer - In May, 2006 , Catherine Sherwood gave a presentation at the Indiana Public Health Association conference in West Lafayette with MPH graduates Kristin Hobson and Nicole Smith: “Children’s Museums: An Innovative Approach to Delivering Health Education.” Dr. Susan Middlestadt, MPH students Surya Kondapuram, Sri Pillarisetty, and Sailaja Rayaprolu also assisted with the project.
  • 2006 summer - Lisako McKyer along with Desiree Goetz and JoBeth McCarthy- Jean of the Indiana Prevention Resource Center and Murali Tangirala of the Indiana State Department of Health (MPH, 2003) published an article entitled “Use of titled Tobacco Retailer Inspections to Reduce Tobacco Sales to Youth: Do Inspections Increase Retailer Compliance” in the International Journal of Consumer Studies in May, 2006.
  • 2006 summer - Noy Kay is leading a summer travel study expedition to Beijing, Hong Kong, and Bangkok, June 18-July 1. Six under undergraduate and 3 graduate students graduate will learn about the health care systems, the public health challenges, and the cultural issues which impact health in China, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
  • 2006 summer - Lesa Huber had an article in the May/ June Indiana Alumni Magazine which discusses the impact of diet and exercise over the lifespan.
  • 2006 summer - Vicky Getty presented a poster at the COPSL (Community Outreach & Partnerships in Service Learning) Summer Research Institute on May 8, 2006. The poster focused on the service-learning partnership between the Dietetics program at IUB and the Monroe County Community School Corporation Transitions program for mentally challenged young adults.
  • 2006 summer - Lloyd Kolbe was selected as the Robert Russell Scholar in Health Education at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. His lecture on May 2 at SIUC was entitled “Health Promotion in the 21st Century.”
  • 2006 spring - William Yarber, Director of the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention, reports that the Center received a five-year, $1.2 million renewal of its cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • 2006 spring - Mohammad Torabi was selected to present the Guest Scholar’s presentation at the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport, and Dance Conference, in conjunction with the 121st National Convention and Exposition of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Salt Lake City, UT, April 25, 2006. His presentation was entitled, “Prevention is the Cure: Challenges and Opportunities in Health Education.”
  • 2006 spring - Michael Reece and the Sexual Health Research Working Group received two grants recently recently, one for $375,000 from The Patty Brisben Foundation, to study sexual function among women recovering from breast cancer and gynecological challenges, and one for $34,000 from the Marion County Health Department, to study correlates of syphilis-related behaviors among men who have sex with men in greater Indianapolis.
  • 2006 spring - David Lohrmann's recent publications include “Process Evaluation for School Health Professionals” in the April, 2006 Journal of School Health Health, and “Longterm Impact of a District-wide School/Community-based Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative on Gateway Drug Use” with Randi Alter, R. Greene, and T. Younoszai in the 2006 Journal of Drug Education Education.
  • 2006 spring - The Center for Minority Health has been established and approved which has the mission of research, outreach, programming, and training with regard to health disparities.
  • 2006 spring - During 2005 our faculty made 77 research presentations, 61 pedagogical presentations; authored 33 research publications; and 10 pedagogical publications. An additional 18 research articles were accepted (in press) for publication. They also authored 2 books, 6 book chapters, and 2 monographs.
  • 2006 spring - With regard to grant activities in 2005: grants totaling over $1.8 million dollars, focusing in the areas of tobacco and other drugs, alcohol, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, and other areas.

  • 2006 spring - The ALANA Health Research Working Group (formerly Minority Health Research Working Group) is committed to cross-cultural research and service that supports the goals and objectives of the Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative. Mary Shaw-Perry and Lisako McKyer are committed to working with students who have an interest in preventive health and/or health care issues that focus on one of the following groups—African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans. The term ALANA is an acronym for these ethnic groups.
  • 2006 spring - Two second year MPH students, Brandy Rollins and Naomi Lane have worked closely with Dr. Mary Shaw-Perry to obtain exciting internships that support the research focus of the ALANA Health Research Working Group (cancer control and care; diabetes prevention and care ) among minority and/or medically underserved populations. Ms. Rollins will begin her internship with the Center for Social and Health Research, under the direction of Roberto Treviño, MD in San Antonio, Texas. Brandy will work with Ms. Charlotte Horner, MPH (a 2005 graduate of our MPH program). She will be responsible for the development and implementation of NEEMA—a new diabetes control and prevention project for African American middle school children. Naomi Lane has been offered an internship with Linda Burhansstipanov. DrPH, MSPH, CHES of the Native American Cancer Research Group (Pine, CO). Dr. B is a nationally known cancer researcher who focused on cancer disparities among Native American populations.
  • 2006 spring - Brandy Rollins and Sarah Vinson (2nd year MPH students) completed a summer long learning experience in Mobile, Alabama, working with the Mobile Youth Study through the Institute for Social Science (University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa) on a longitudinal study (10th year) that examines hopelessness and risk behavior among adolescents living in high poverty inner city neighborhoods.
  • 2006 spring - Dong-Chul Seo published his studies: “Correlates of attitudes toward a smoking ban in vehicles” in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, “An explicative model of unsafe work behavior” in Safety Science, “Indiana residents’ perceptions of driving and lower blood alcohol concentration” in the American Journal of Health Education, and “Sociodemographic correlates of public perceptions regarding a smoking ban in bars and restaurants” (co-author with Dr. Torabi) in the Journal of Drug Education.
  • 2006 spring - Dong-Chul Seo and Mohammad Torabi were awarded two grants totaling $75,494 from the American Institutes for Research to conduct a study on the effect of the Bloomington and Monroe County public smoking ban on incidence of acute myocardial infarction and to perform a secondary analysis of the Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey data set.
  • 2006 spring - Michael Reece recently received the Society Research Award from the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health at their annual meeting in San Francisco. This award is given to someone in recognition of unique contributions to the further development of innovative research agendas in sexual health.
  • 2006 spring - Lisako McKyer was recently awarded a 3-year research grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The award (nearly $250,000 direct/indirect costs) will enable Dr. McKyer to focus on her research in child and adolescent health. She is joining a team led by three renowned senior researchers - Dr. Jim Sherman (IU Psychology), Dr. Laurie Chassin and Dr. Clark Presson (Arizona State Univ - Psychology).
  • 2006 spring - Since summer 2005, Lisako McKyer has worked with undergraduate students, Brittany Veal and Charlene Maddox, on a study related to adolescent health risk behaviors. Ms. Veal and Ms. Maddox played critical roles in the data collection efforts. To date, survey data were collected from more than 800 Indiana 7th through 12th graders, and are currently undergoing analyses.
  • 2006 spring - In March 2005 Lisako McKyer traveled to Japan as part of her funded research on cross-cultural comparisons of factors related to adolescent health risk behaviors. Along with Dr. Mika Omori of Ochanomizu University (Tokyo), she traveled to the cities of Tokyo, Sasebo, and Nagasaki, where she conducted several site visits to Japanese schools, and met with students, teachers and administrators. The study was funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
  • 2006 spring - David Lohrmann co-authored an article with IPRC Research Associate Jeanie Alter entitled “Building Support for Coordinated School Health Programs” that appeared in the Spring issue of The Health Educator.
  • 2006 spring - Millicent Fleming-Moran and Mary Shaw-Perry received a grant from the Southeast/South Central Indiana Area Health Education Center to collaborate with the Bloomington Hospital, Office of Development and Training in an education and research initiative focused on “Building Bridges to Understanding: Moving Towards Cultural Competency.” The first workshop was held on November 14, 2005 with featured guest speaker Roberto Treviño. Dr. Treviño’s medical practice and research has focused on diabetes care, treatment, and prevention among Latino populations. MPH students, Melody Poindexter, Jacqueline Terrell, Brandy Rollins, and Naomi Lane, assisted with the design and implementation of the workshop.
  • 2006 spring - Trent Applegate and David Lohrmann are part of the Michiana - Coordinated School Health Institute sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Indiana & Michigan State Board of Education.
  • 2006 spring - 26 research presentations involving our faculty and students were presented at the American Public Health Association 2005 Conference. Presentations were also made at several national and international conferences during the past year. Our faculty have received honors for their research and service activities.
  • 2006 spring -Our faculty have continued to acquire a number of contracts and grants from a number of agencies, i.e., Indiana Department of Health; Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction; Centers for Disease Control; U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration; National Institutes of Health, and others.
  • 2006 spring - Robert Billingham serves as project and research director of the Children's Door - Monitored Parenting Time Exchange Service. Graduate student Karen Ellis serves as the Program Coordinator. This program operates in Bloomington, Indiana, through a partnership between the Department of Applied Health Science, the South Central Community Action Program Head Start, and the Children's Rights Council.
  • 2006 spring - Laurie Legocki, Nate Stupiansky, Rob Gilchrist are the co-investigators of a study entitled: "Situational Factors and Their Influence on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behavior during a University Special Event." Study development is currently underway and data collection for this study is planned for later this spring.
