  • 2007 fall - IU News release on November 19 entitled "Heart attacks in non-smokers decreased with smoking ban" quotes Dong-Chul Seo.
  • 2007 fall - Several faculty members are invited to speak at Obesity: Causes, Consequences and Policy Challenges Conference at Wylie Hall 005 on November 9. Dean Robert Goodman makes opening remarks in the morning. Alyce Fly talks about "The USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program: Monitoring and Evaluation in Indiana Schools.” Mohammad Torabi presents “Obesity Trends: Prevention is the Cure.” Susan Middlestadt discusses “Identifying Behaviors and Behavioral Determinants: Applying Behavioral Science to Eating Better and Moving More.”
  • 2007 fall - Lesa Huber, in collaboration with the School of Informatics, is a co-investigator on a $821,491 grant from the National Science Foundation entitled, "Privacy in Home-based Ubicomp." The grant project will examine ubiquitous computing in the homes of elders with an emphasis on design and evaluation for privacy. Huber's primary role is in leading the research with the older subjects at a "Living Lab" which will be located in a house across from the Informatics building on Woodlawn Ave. as well as a longitudinal ethnographic study at Meadowood Retirement Community.
  • 2007 fall - A new study, “Reduced Admissions for Acute Myocardial Infarction Associated with a Public Smoking Ban: Matched Controlled Study” (published in Journal of Drug Education in November 2007), conducted by Dong- Chul Seo and Mohammad Torabi has drawn international and national attention. The major finding was aired by more than 30 TV and radio stations, including CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX, and featured in more than 50 newspapers and online news.
  • 2007 fall - Christopher Fisher, doctoral student, has had his abstract, “Sexual Health of Same-Sex Attracted Male Youth: Impacts of Abstinence-Only Education,” selected to receive this year’s School Health Education and Services (SHES) Section Student Award by the American Association for Health Education.
  • 2007 fall - Kristen Jozkowski, doctoral student, has a manuscript entitled “Evaluation of a Weight Loss Intervention Program among College Females” published in Eta Sigma Gamma’s The Health Education Monograph Series for Nov. ’07.
  • 2007 fall - Michael Reece and Debby Herbenick received a $1 million research grant from the Patty Brisben Foundation. The grant provided core support for the creation of the new Center for Sexual Health Promotion. The Center offers a comprehensive and coordinated effort to facilitate partnerships between various researchers and clinicians to advance sexual health research, education, and training.
  • 2007 fall - The Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) received a $544,500 contract for the '07-'08 SFY from the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG). The Center will deliver technical assistance and participatory evaluation services to eleven grantee communities to enhance their capacity to conduct, monitor, and sustain culturally competent, data-driven and evidence-based prevention activities - programs, policies, and practices - to reduce substance use and abuse across the lifespan. Ruth Gassman will serve as principal investigator.
  • 2007 fall - Through the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community initiatives awarded the Department of Applied Health Science $400,000/year for three years to enable AmeriCorp Members and their Supervisors to improve the health of those who live in Indiana. Erin Cooperman is the Program Coordinator. Professors Lloyd Kolbe and Mohammad Torabi are co-principal investigators.
  • 2007 fall - Dong-Chul Seo is the principal investigator on a two-year federal grant in the amount of $331,076 funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The project will use a multi-strategy approach to reduce high-risk and underage drinking among IUB students which includes requiring all incoming freshmen to complete a three-hour-long interactive Web-based cognitive-behavioral skills prevention course before beginning classes in Fall. Dr. Ruth Gassman will serve as a consultant on this grant.
  • 2007 fall - Michael Reece and Debby Herbenick have been awarded a $1.1 million research grant to continue the work of the Sexual Health Research Working Group (SHRWG) that is focused on women's sexual health. This grant provides significant support aimed at strengthening the infrastructure of the SHRWG at IU and helping to facilitate interdisciplinary partnerships with other academic and community-based entities to understand and respond to the unique sexual health issues facing women.
  • 2007 fall - October 23, 2007. Indiana Daily Student's article: "Do you really need 8 glasses of water per day?" quotes Alice Lindeman.
  • 2007 fall - Drug use among Indiana adolescents continues to decline, according to results from the 17th annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents, conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center.
  • 2007 fall - Dong-Chul Seo, Laurie Chassin, Clark C. Presson, and Steven J. Sherman published a manuscript entitled "Prospective Predictors of Long-term Abstinence versus Relapse among Smokers Who Quit as Young Adults" in the American Journal of Public Health.
  • 2007 summer - Dr. Catherine Sherwood is working this summer on the Orange County Indiana Community Health Needs Assessment. She and MPH students Lindsey Cook, Amanda Daughtery, and Nanci Ickes presented information about the project at the 2007 Indiana Public Health Association Annual Conference in May. The title of the presentation was “Collaboration and Community Participation: Essential Requirements for Identifying Health Needs in Rural Indiana.” The following colleagues and students are also involved in the Orange County project: Bloomington Hospital of Orange County- Gene Perry, CEO; Candace Isom, RN, COO; Hanna Swayer, RN Indiana State Department of Health, Office of Rural Health- Jessica Granger Thomas, MPH, CHES (MPH Alum), Hospital Program Manager; Indiana University Faculty: Lesa Lorenzen-Huber, PhD MPH; Graduate Students: Ali Geshnizjani, Sungwook Han, Robin Meleski, MPH and Katie Wilkinson.
  • 2007 summer - Dr. Cecilia Obeng received a Summer Faculty Fellowship for 2007 to examine the kind of health materials that preschool teachers present to their children and the possible outcome on the children’s lifestyle.
  • 2007 summer - Stuart Grande and Dr. Mary Shaw are co-authors of a paper entitled, “Beyond Invisibility: Conversation About Health and Health Care with African- American Men” that will be presented at The 19th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education; June 10th -15th, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
  • 2007 spring - Dr. Catherine Sherwood is working on a sexuality survey of middle and high school with data analysis help from the following: MPH/ MS Students: Kristen Jozkowski, Courtney Stewart, Erin Triplett, Alayna Florman, Sarah Koch, Dawn Smith, Sally Pelto-Wheeler, Anna Saraceno, Jennifer Rafalski; PhD Students: Dayna Fischtein and Nate Stupiansky.
  • 2007 spring - Dr. Kathleen Gilbert co-chaired the 29th Annual Meeting of the Association for Death Education and Counseling. The theme of the conference was “Transformation and Creativity in Dying, Death and Bereavement,” and it was extremely successful, attracting participants from across North America as well as from around the world.
  • 2007 spring - Dr. Davis Lohrmann published “Substitution of Marijuana for Alcohol: The Role of Perceived Access and Harm,” in the Journal of Drug Education 36 (4) with R. J. Alter and R. Greene. His presentations include: “Sustainability,” for the Michiana Coordinated School Health Leadership Institute. Indiana Department of Education, Michigan Department of Education, and American Cancer Society in January 2007 and “Health Promotion in Schools: The Future is Now!” for the Art and Science of Health Promotion Conference in March 2007.

  • 2007 spring - Dr. Debby Herbenick presented at the First International Congress on Lifespan Sexuality Education on January 4, 5, & 6 in Hyderabad, India. Her interview can be viewed by clicking here.
  • 2007 spring - During 2006 our faculty authored 37 research publications, made 74 research presentations, authored 12 pedagogical publications, and made 88 pedagogical presentations. They also authored 4 books or monographs, and 5 book chapters.
  • 2007 spring - We received grants totaling $2.5 million dollars this year focusing on tobacco and other drugs, public health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition/ obesity, and other areas. The Indiana Prevention Resource Center has expanded its mission and acquired additional grants, contracts and staff. The Rural Center for HIV/AIDS Prevention received renewal funding from the Centers for Disease Control.
