MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH
HELP OTHER LEAD HEALTHIER LIVES: LEADERSHIP AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program prepares students to serve as public health professionals and leaders in government, business, industry, higher education, volunteer agencies, and public and private sector health care settings. The program is taught by expert, engaged faculty and is based on the core competencies that guide the Certified Public Health professional (CPH) process for students graduating from accredited programs of public health. After completing the MPH program students will be prepared to successfully pursue this new certification that is quickly becoming the expectation for the nation’s leading public health employers.

Program Emphasis
The program focuses on the social and behavioral sciences that are essential for understanding health behaviors and developing effective health promotion interventions. Students complete core public health course work in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health behavior theory, and health administration and further specialize by selecting one of two concentrations: leadership and practice or research.
Public Health Leadership and Practice
Develop the leadership skills necessary for designing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs. Course work includes the racial, ethnic, and cultural determinants of health; the science of intervention design; and electives in your area of interest. During your studies, you will compile a professional portfolio that will be beneficial in acquiring a leadership position in public health practice.
Public Health Research
Acquire the skills necessary to design, conduct, and disseminate high-quality public health research. Course work includes research design and the review and synthesis of related literature; electives in topical, statistical, or methodological areas; and participation in supervised research with faculty members. Students will complete a formal research-based master’s thesis.
Degree Requirements
The Master of Public Health degree requires the completion of 43 credits over a minimum of two years of study. In addition to core and concentration-specific course work, students participate in the research and practice initiatives of faculty members and other public health entities. Students can choose electives related to sexual health, nutrition, human development and family studies, and industrial safety and hygiene. Internships allow students to participate in professional public health activities in local, state, national, and international settings. Our students have served as interns at major research centers, hospitals and clinics, and a wide variety of voluntary and governmental health agencies.
