  • 2009 spring - Dr. Noy Kay will again lead a “Travel Study” for both undergraduate (HPER H 445) and graduate (HPER H 645) levels during summer I, 2009. This course will involve an overseas field study trip to Seoul, Republic of Korea; Beijing, People’s Republic of China; and Bangkok, Thailand. The course primarily focuses on activities related to health, the main health challenges, health care systems, relationship of health and culture, status and health issues, the implementation of health programs, etc.  Sightseeing will be part of studying the influence of cultures on people’s decisions regarding their behaviors and lifestyles, which in turn will impact health. The trip will take 12 days, May 13 – 25, 2009. It will cost approximately $3,500.00 for the airfare, 4-star hotel, bus transportation, meals, visa to get in China, and health insurance.   • 2009 spring - May 2, 2009, in HPER 125. Eta Sigma Gamma - Nu Chapter is holding Initiation for new members. The Initiation guest speaker this year is Gina Goebel, MEd, CHES. Please join us to congratulate the students and meet their families and friends. Light Snacks will be available.
  • 2009 spring - April 21, 2009. ESG - Nu chapter will have the Dodgeball Tournament.
  • 2009 spring - The 2009 RCAP national conference will be April 16-18, 2009 at Indiana University. The conference “HIV/STD Prevention in Rural Communities: Sharing Successful Strategies VI,” will be conducted at the Indiana Memorial Union on the IU campus. The deadline for submission of abstracts for presentations is February 6, 2009.
  • 2009 spring - April 17 - 18, 2009. Lilly Health Education Overnight. This overnight health education event targets at risk girls ranging from ages 8-12 years old. Lessons on nutrition, exercise, first aid, and healthy relationships help to convey important tips for living a healthy life in all the areas of health. Approximately 50 girls attend with twelve educators from ESG & MPHA. Two meals and one evening snack are provided. The event is located at the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center in Indianapolis, IN. This event is free to all attendees.

  • 2009 spring - January 19, 2009. The Masters of Public Health Association (MPHA) just received a grant from the City of Bloomington to provide HIV outreach to rural individuals on Martin Luther King Day. The goal of this project is to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS-related issues to residents of Southern Indiana who live in rural areas. By linking members MPHA and members of the community living in or traveling to rural areas, they will disseminate prevention materials to individuals who are using Rural Transit bus stops in Bloomington and Ellettsville, Indiana on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2009.
  • 2008 fall - Dr. John Seffrin, former Chair of the Department of Applied Health Science and current National Chief Executive Officer of the American Cancer Society, will receive an honorary doctorate degree from Indiana University during the commencement ceremony. He has been invited to make a presentation on Friday, December 19 at 4 p.m. in State Room East, in the Indiana Memorial Union, followed by a reception in the University Faculty Club, IMU. Dean Goodman and Dr. Torabi would very much like for you to attend. Dr. Seffrin is an inspirational speaker who will talk on the very timely topic of "Cancer at a Crossroads: Access to Health Care in Post-election America." He will discuss how far we’ve come in our understanding of cancer and how to deal with the cancer problem, including the issue of access to quality health care. His remarks will outline broad strategies by which we can eliminate cancer as a major public health problem in this century, including the need for systemic health care reform in the new Obama administration.
  • 2008 fall - Let the data drive your funding requests, curriculum selection, and prevention needs by participating in the Nineteenth Annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents: the Indiana Survey. Participating school corporations will receive a local and state report on: alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) prevalence rates, ATOD use related risk and protective factors, and gambling behavior. Registration and participation is FREE.
  • 2008 fall - Lauren Boyle receives Travel Award from the Indiana University Graduate Professional Student Organization. Each semester, the GPSO awards $3,000 in Travel Awards for graduate and professional students to support expenses for events that promote academic and professional development (such as conferences, workshops, competitions and auditions). Funds may be used for registration fees, presentation materials, transportation costs, lodging and per diem expenses. The recipients are selected through a competitive process in which fellow graduate and professional students review and assess anonymous applications.
  • 2008 fall - As we wind down the fall semester, the Department will have an informal luncheon to thank you for all our Department accomplishments during the fall semester. The luncheon will be held in the Coronation Room (in the Indiana Memorial Union), from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9th. If you have classes that interfere with the above time, please feel free to come and go anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. This will give us an opportunity for interaction between AHS Associate Instructors, faculty, and staff.   • 2008 fall - Thomas Feldman, who earned his Master of Public Health from IU in 1995, received this year's John R. Endwright Alumni Service Award. Since 2003, Thomas Feldman has served as Service Line Director, Physician Service at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois (MMCI) in Peoria, Ill. His responsibilities have included but have not been limited to physician contracting, development and maintenance of compensation plans. His position, which reports directly to the CEO of MMCI, is accountable for an annual operating budget of over $60 million and approximately 400 full-time equivalents. MMCI is a multi-specialty hospital-owned provider group working from 30 locations in Central Illinois.
  • 2008 fall - Roberta Ogletree received the school's W. W. Patty Distinguished Alumni Award this year. Dr. Ogletree, who earned her H.S.D. from IU in 1991, presently serves as professor in the Department of Health Education and Recreation at Southern Illinois University, where she also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Women's Studies Program. She has been on the faculty at SIU since 1991. Her teaching and research interests include Women's Health, Human Sexuality Education and professional preparation. She is the author or co-author of dozens of articles and publications and has co-written two textbooks on health education skills and competencies and sexuality education curricula.

  • 2008 fall - The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals for The Kinsey Institute Student Research Grants 2008-2009.   • 2008 fall - The Third Annual HPER Graduate Student Boat Outing on Lake Monroe on September 20, from 10am to 6pm, at Four Winds Marina, Lake Monroe. This event is for incoming graduate students to meet returning graduate students, tour our local Lake Monroe, and come out just to relax. The cost is $25 per person, plus one food item of your choice. Only 24 open spots. Please RSVP and pay in full no later than September 10 to Lauren Boyle.

  • 2008 fall - Cognitive, Behavioral and Economic Approaches to Childhood and Adolescent Obesity Conference. September 4-5, at Wylie Hall 005. Conference Organizers: Alyce Fly (Applied Health Sciences), Gerhard Glomm (Economics), Rusty Tchernis (Economics) and Peter Todd (Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Informatics). This conference and the associated 2008-9 speaker series1 is funded by the Indiana University Institute for Advanced Studies through their New Knowledge Seminar Grants; the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; the Department of Economics and the Department of Psychology.
  • 2008 fall - Dr. Amed YoussefAgha joins our department as an Assistant Professor. He has earned B.Sc. in Mathematics from Menofia University-Egypt, MS in Computer Science from the University of Louisville, KY, MS & PhD degrees from the University of Louisville, KY with an emphasis on Biostatistics-Decision Sciences. His specialty encompasses  Public Health/Biostatistics. His research focus is on integration of methods and techniques of decision analysis for diagnosing or health-outcome of medical intervention in recurrent diseases/injuries Investigation of development constraints in healthcare organizations.
  • 2008 fall - Dr. Jun Dai joins our department as an Assistant Professor. She has an M.D. degree from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, China, a Master’s degree in Nutrition and Food Hygiene from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, China, and PhD in Nutrition and Health Sciences with an emphasis in Epidemiology from Emory University. Her specialty is in Public Health/Epidemiology with nutrition emphasis. Her Research interests include nutrition, chronic disease, and maternal and child health.
  • 2008 fall - Dr. JoAnne C. Bunnage joins our department as a Visiting Academic Specialist. her education background includes Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Education from Oregon State University, Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame, and PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Indiana University. Concentration areas include health, higher education administration and leadership development. Her experience includes student and faculty learning engagement, focus group research, and educational assessment.
  • 2008 fall - Ms. Mallori DeSalle joins IPRC as a Research Assistant. She earns Master of Art in Counseling from Truman State University. Her credentials include Nationally Certified Counselor & Certified Prevention Professional Community Prevention Specialist and Research Associate with the Afternoons R.O.C.K. program. Her areas of expertise include mental health treatment, community prevention programming, substance abuse prevention and prevention curriculum.
  • 2008 fall - Ms. Sally Pelto-Wheeler joins IPRC as an Assistant to the Director. She has a Master of Public Health degree from Indiana University. Her areas of expertise includes Community prevention programming, public health program planning, worksite wellness development, and office management.
  • 2008 summer - Due to the university’s increased emphasis on global education, and the deepening of HPER’s international arrangements, Dr. Lloyd Kolbe has been appointed to a new Associate Dean position for Global and Community Health. Dr. Kolbe has a welter of international experience and is well regarded in China. Because of his efforts, the Chinese Government and their partner institutions have signed an agreement with our school that will enable us to consult on a nationwide project involving physical fitness impacting every single school child in China (all 120,000,000 of them). This will be conducted throughout China’s school systems and Dr. Kolbe will be taking the lead. There will be opportunities for other faculty to be involved as well.
  • 2008 summer - Dr. Lloyd Kolbe accompanied Drs. Goodman, Koceja, and Skirvin to travel to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai in May to meet with university presidents, deans, and other officials. Unfortunately, due to the earthquake, they were unable to travel to our sister school in Chengtu. All of the schools visited are quite advanced in their application of kinesiology, recreation, and public health. There will be a number of faculty research exchanges. There will be opportunities for selected faculty within HPER to travel to various universities for research exchanges and conferences starting this Fall. Additionally, many universities will be sending students for doctoral and masters education. We, in turn, will be able to send selected students on exchanges to China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Course exchanges will  be considered later. Distance education is another aspect in which we will be rapidly engaging, where faculty from HPER can teach courses or modules to our colleagues in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and visa versa – all on line.

  • 2008 summer - Indiana University, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has been chosen in 2008 as one of eight new education centers to provide training for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Our new Heartland OSHA Training Institute Education Center has launched a new website (http://www.indiana.edu/~hrtland/index.shtml) and started offering training courses. The Center can also provide customized safety training for workplace at discounted rates.   • 2008 summer - IU Scholarship Website has made some key changes. The new Automatic Academic Scholarship criteria are available for students applying for the Fall of 2009. IU will now be offering scholarships to top students recognized by National Scholar Programs. IU now has a Spanish language page, with a pdf of our new printed Spanish language brochure.
  • 2008 summer - New graduate certificate in Gerontology and Health has been approved. The certificate is 12 credit hours, and includes a 3 credit practicum. Students do not need to be in residence in Bloomington to complete any part of the certificate. All of the coursework and the practicum can be completed online or on campus.   • 2008 summer -  Jasynda Lacy has been elected representative to the Professional Service Delivery Staff Council for the period of 2008-09 and 2009-10. Merrill Hatlen will serve as alternate for the 2008-09 academic year. Carole Nowicke will be our carryover representative for the 2008 09 academic year.
  • 2008 spring - Center for Minority Health is sponsoring an event at the Monroe County Public Library on May 13 at 6:00pm in conjunction with the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective as they present their new book Our Bodies, Ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth. Joining the author Judy Norsigian in the panel discussion will be planning committee members Cecilia Obeng, LaDonna BlueEye, Leila Dabbagh, and Zobeida Bonilla of the School of HPER, and Georg’ann Cattelona from BABS. The Center for Sexual Health Promotion and the Kinsey Institute are cosponsoring the event.

  • 2008 spring - AmeriCorps Improving Health Throughout Indiana (AIHTI) is beginning recruitment for the 08-09 Program Year. AIHTI pairs local non-profit organizations with students and graduates interested in gaining experience in promoting nutrition and physical activity while serving their community. Many students count their AIHTI service towards internship requirements. All members receive a living allowance and education award. Our host sites include state and local health departments, hospitals, Boys and Girls Clubs and Area Agencies on Aging. There will be an informational session in HPER 125 on Friday, April 25th from 12-1. Students may also contact Erin Cooperman.

  • 2008 spring - Joyce Arthur received 2007 HPER Outstanding Professional Service Delivery Award from Dean Goodman on April 24, 2008. Arthur has made special efforts toward improving the School and the University; positive attitudes; and exemplary job performance.
  • 2008 spring - Joyce Arthur has been recognized by Dean Goodman for the services she has provided for 45 years.

  • 2008 spring - February 13 - 14, 2008, at NCAA Hall of Champions, Indianapolis. Piece of the Pie Advocacy Day. Indiana Collegiate Action Network (ICAN), Indiana Public Health Association (IPHA), and the Indiana Society of Public Health Education (InSOPHE) join together to sponsor the annual "Piece of the Pie Advocacy Day" February 13th and 14th, 2008 NCAA Hall of Champions, Indianapolis InSOPHE and IPHA welcome the Indiana Collegiate Action Network (ICAN) to this year's conference. ICAN's addition brings new opportunities and an expanded program. Participants may register for one or both days of the conference. February 13th will focus on ways in which campuses can address mental health concerns such as suicide and emerging trends such as pharming. February 14th will be the traditional Piece of the Pie Advocacy Day activities with legislative trainings and a trip to the statehouse in the afternoon, plus an additional legislative topic for our collegiate partners. Continuing Education Contact Hour (CHEC) for certified health education specialists (CHES) will be offered. Last year's event was a great success! Mark your calendars now and look for more details and registration to come in January!

  • 2008 spring - February 11, 2008, noon - 1:00pm, at HPER Foyer. Taiwanese students in HPER would like to share Chinese New Year custom with students, staff, and faculty members. Original Chinese New Year festival stories and the way people celebrate the holiday will be introduced. In addition, different flavors of Chinese candies and Taiwanese high mountain tea will be provided for everyone to taste. There will also be demonstration on how to use Chinese writing brush and exhibit calligraphy in the lobby since writing Spring Festival couplets is an important activity during Chinese New Year. So, please come and celebrate!
