  • 2012 spring - Applied Health Science graduate student and research coordinator Omar Martinez is moving on in May 2012 to take part in the Behavioral Sciences Research in HIV Infection postdoctoral research training program at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He will participate in the three year training program in HIV/sexuality research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, and will also complete an MS in clinical research methods at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Omar’s unique JD/MPH training in law and public health at Indiana University, as well as his impressive record of research and community-based experience, gave him the edge for acceptance into this highly prestigious program. He will continue to work with his graduate mentor Dr. Brian Dodge, who is also an alumnus of the Columbia University postdoc program, and his colleagues at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion.
  • 2012 spring - Dr. Noy Kay will again lead a “Travel Study” for both undergraduate (HPER H 445) and graduate (HPER H 645) levels during summer, 2012. This course will involve an overseas field study trip to Beijing, People’s Republic of China, and Bangkok, Thailand. The course primarily focuses on activities related to health, the main health challenges, health care systems, relationship of health and culture, status and health issues, the implementation of health programs, etc. Sightseeing will be part of studying the influence of cultures on people’s decisions regarding their behaviors and lifestyles, which in turn will impact health.   • 2012 spring - AHS spring recognition luncheon will be held on Friday, April 27th, from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Coronation Room (Tudor Room in the Indiana Memorial Union). Because of class conflicts, please feel free to come and go as your schedule permits.

  • 2012 spring - The Office of Community Health Engagement has devoted the assistance of a Master of Public Health student intern, Laura Colman, in addressing one of the goals in the school sector of the community by implementing an evidenced-based interpersonal violence and bully-prevention program in the Stalker Elementary School, a local elementary school.
  • 2012 spring - The Office of Community Health Engagement and the Office of Public Health Performance Management at the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) have recently created a partnership for collaborating on workforce development activities for public health personnel throughout Indiana. The pilot session of the series, “Internships for Public Health Workforce Development,” is scheduled for February 13 at 2:00 pm and will feature Dr. Catherine Sherwood-Laughlin, HPER MPH Program Director. The detailed information and the link to register and attend the webinar will be available via the OCHE biweekly email update February 1. The webinar will also be advertised to local health department staff through ISDH listservs.
  • 2012 fall - IPRC has published the second issue of newsletter, An Ounce of Prevention, in January, 2012, to continue providing the public with updates on the work they are doing as well as how they are promoting prevention, treatment and recovery efforts in Indiana.
  • 2011 fall - The position of Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies has been offered to and accepted by Dr. Michael Reece. He will be working very hard with all faculty, administrators, staff, and students in our School in enhancing our research infrastructure and graduate study programs. The effective date for Dr. Reece to begin his duties as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies is January 1, 2012.
  • 2011 fall - Dr. Noy Kay has been invited as a keynote speaker to speak in the topic of "Health Promoting Schools in Thailand" during the 2011 Conference on Health Promoting Schools in Taiwan. The Conference was held in Taipei, Taiwan during November 15 - 19, 2011.
  • 2011 fall - The first Indiana Prevention Resource Center newsletter, An Once of Prevention, has been published in November 2011. The newsletter is published quarterly to keep readers informed of the work the center is currently involved in, and how the center is keeping up with prevention, treatment and recovery efforts in the state of Indiana. Upcoming trainings and events useful to prevention professionals will be posted. Current health data and trends in the state will be updated, too. <more>
  • 2011 fall - RCAP announced the establishment of an endowed research grant, the Surgeon General C. Everett Koop HIV/AIDS Research grant, on October 14, 2011, the eve of Dr. Koop’s 95th birthday on October 15. Beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year this grant will be awarded annually by RCAP on a competitive basis nationally to support doctoral student research related to HIV/AIDS prevention.   • 2011 fall - Welcome to the new academic year! Faculty, staff and AIs are invited to the Department of Applied Health Science's fall orientation event on Friday evening, September 9, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The picnic will be held at Pic-A-Chic (map provided upon request from Annie in HPER 116). Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m.

    Indiana Prevention Resource Center's upcoming course: The Drug Use Continuum: A comprehensive exploration of drug use within society http://www.drugs.indiana.edu/consult-training.html

    Participants of this 40 hour course will investigate drug use in American society. The course will explore several factors in drug use including, history, trends, drug administration, cultural and political influences, consumption patterns, regulations, media influences, relationships to crime and violence, drug manufacturing and distribution, physical and behavioral effects, and health consequences.

  • 2011 summer - Dr. Kathleen Gilbert has been selected as executive associate dean of the school. Dr. Gilbert, who joined the Department in 1988, also has served as the director of undergraduate education. Her research has largely focused on behavioral health, specifically bereavement; loss and grieving in the context of family; loss and meaning making; stress and resilience in the family; cross-national research; and qualitative research. She currently serves as president of the Association for Death Education and Counseling, and is also Certified Family Life Educator (since 2000) and Fellow in Thanatology: Dying, Death, and Bereavement (since 2005). Dr. Gilbert replaces Dr. Jerry Wilkerson, who is retiring after serving in this position for eight years.
  • 2011 summer - Dr. Brian Dodge has been an Assistant Research Scientist in the Department of Applied Health Science and Associate Director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion. He now joins our faculty as an Associate Professor of Public Health with an emphasis on Community Health Engagement. He received his Ph.D. in Health Behavior (with minors in Human Sexuality and Dutch) from Indiana University in 2002. He completed his postdoctoral training in the Behavioral Sciences Research in HIV Infection Fellowship in the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He then served as an Assistant Professor in the College of Public Health and Health Professions at the University of Florida for two years. A proud alumnus, he re-joined the faculty of Indiana University in 2007. He is a core faculty member of the Public Health unit and Affiliated Faculty at The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.
  • 2011 summer - Dr. Hsien-Chang Lin joins our department as Assistant Professor of Public Health. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Sociology and a Master’s degree in Economics from National Taiwan University, a Master’s degree in Applied Economics and a joint Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, with a dual major in health policy and pharmaceutical administration. After completing his doctorate, he obtained his postdoctoral traineeship at the Center for Medication Use, Policy and Economics, and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan.

    Dr. Lin has a strong interest in quantitative methodology in health services research, and his research generally focuses on application of statistical/ econometric methodology in examining issues related to patient health care utilization, physician decision making, patient labor market participation, effectiveness of medical care delivery (especially pharmaceuticals), and health outcomes/ pharmacoeconomic evaluation in diseases. In particular, he has a strong disease-specific research interest in outcomes evaluation in chronic diseases (especially depression, psoriasis, acne, and glaucoma), and study of economic outcomes (such as health care expenditures) related to pharmacotherapy, and how public health policies should be reconsidered based on economic and patient outcomes. Dr. Lin has led and participated in several research projects in the areas of health outcomes, patient medication use behaviors, pharmacoeconomic evaluation and pharmaceutical health services research.

  • 2011 summer - Dr. Laura McCloskey joins our department as Professor of Public Health. Dr. McCloskey holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin, a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Michigan. Professor McCloskey has performed federally-funded research on a variety of outcomes associated with violence against girls and women. Her work describes mental health and physical health disparities according to gender, class, race and ethnicity. She has collaborated with city public health departments and non-profit agencies.
  • 2011 summer - Dr. Beth Meyerson joins our department as Assistant Professor of Public Health. Dr. Meyerson earned her baccalaureate at the University of Michigan, she holds a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree from Christian Theological Seminary and a doctorate in public policy analysis and administration from Saint Louis University. Dr. Meyerson comes to IU after directing Policy Resource Group, LLC; an Indianapolis firm specializing in health policy research and strategy with domestic and international emphases. Her work is informed by public health service as the AIDS/STD Director for the state of Missouri and through years of work in private and non-profit sectors in St. Louis, Indianapolis, St. Petersburg, Ann Arbor, and Boston. Dr. Meyerson has worked in Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, India, Russia and throughout the Caribbean. Her most recent research appears in Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Public Health Reports, The American Journal of Public Health, and The Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. Her most recent book (2008) is Ready to Go: The History and Contributions of U.S. Public Health Advisors. Her research interests include the structural barriers to health or disease prevention, health policy capacities in communities and among health professionals, and social constructions of and by health policy target populations. Her current focus is the expansion of a phenomenological study in Indiana about the experience of HIV testing.
  • 2011 summer - Dr. Vanessa Schick joins our department as Assistant Research Scientist. Dr. Schick earned her Ph.D. from The George Washington University in 2010 and, since then, worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow for our Center for Sexual Health Promotion. Dr. Schick's research generally focuses on biopychosociocultural predictors of men's and women's sexual health and wellbeing. She is the recipient of the 2011 American Sexually Transmitted Disease Association Development Award: Sexual Risk Factors among Women who have Sex with Men and Women.
  • 2011 summer - Our long-time Academic Advisor Harriet Castrataro has retired in July. Our new Academic Advisors are Paulene Hardy (for Public Health/Community Health and Health Education programs) and Shannan Stryjewski (for Dietetics, HDFS, Nutrition Science, and Safety programs). Their new offices are located in the new HPER Courtyard Rooms 101 & 103, respectively.
  • 2011 spring - James W. Curran, MD, MPH, received the 2011 Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award from RCAP at RCAP national conference, April 2011.
  • 2011 spring - Professor David Lohrmann gave the Scholar Award presentation entitle “Thinking of a Change: Health Education for the 2020 Generation” at the annual meeting of the American Association for Health Education in San Diego on April 1, 2011. Lohrmann is the 2011 recipient of this award in recognition of career scholarly contributions to the profession. In 2009, he also received the William A. Howe Award from the American School Health Association in recognition of career service contributions to the field.

  • 2011 spring - The Public Health Student Assembly (PHSA) will be hosting a fundraiser at Bucceto's Restaurant on Monday, March 28th, 2011 from 4:00 -10:00 pm.

    If you present the fund-raising flyer, PHSA will get 20% of your total bill. The flyer is good at both locations and works for dine-in and carry out.

    The MPH Culminating Experience and Competency Assessment

    Description: Each concentration in the newly expanded (and continuing to expand) MPH program is driven by a set of identified learning competencies that shape curricula and other learning experiences for MPH students. One major required portion of each MPH program is a process called the MPH Culminating Experience that serves as one of the key mechanisms for assessing students’ attainment of competencies and that helps students to articulate their professional skill set. This brown bag will provide an overview of the MPH Culminating Experience used in our currently accredited program and offer an opportunity for faculty and staff to discuss the expansion of this process as public health programs evolve within the school.

  • 2010 summer - Dr. Jon Macy has been offered and has accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Health Administration with our Department of Applied Health Science. He is most qualified for the position and is a promising scholar and leader in the field.
  • 2010 summer - AHS graduate student Omar Martinez, in collaboration with community partner Guadalupe Kelle, has successfully acquired a grant from the National Minority AIDS Council for The Latino Action League, Inc., the largest HIV/AIDS organization providing a wide range of programs and services for Latinos in Indianapolis and surrounding areas. The grant will provide a computer that can be used by the patients at the center and will provide access to online HIV/AIDS-related information clearinghouses, news sites, and trainings which will enable them to make informed choices related to prevention, treatment and care. The award includes a training, “Equal Access Initiative: HIV/AIDS Information Resources from the National Library Training,” in Orlando. In addition, Ms. Kelle will spend five days at the United States Conference on AIDS with all expenses covered by the grant. Martinez notes, “I am thrilled an honored to be representing the Department of Applied Health Science and IU in underprivileged and marginalized communities across the state. Dr. Brian Dodge has been my mentor throughout the course of my academic life and I would like to thank him as well for all his hard work, commitment, and knowledge in the fields of sexual health, HIV/AIDS, and other related issues.”

  • 2010 spring - January 15, 2010. IPRC Needs Assessment and Planning Grant calls for application. Funded by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC), a grant valued at $5,000 is available on a competitive basis to coalitions, schools, churches and other non-profit entities to receive IPRC services to assist with substance abuse prevention needs assessment and planning.   • 2010 spring - January 8, 2010. The Mater of Public Health Student Association (MPHA) in collaboration with the HPER-Dominican Republic Initiative and the RAICES project: Research to Action Initiative in Community Health, Environment, and Sustainable Tourism is having a drive to collect gently used and/or new hats, gloves, and scarves for children aged 0-12 living of the community El Convento, Constanza, in the rugged Dominican highlands, where temperatures reach the low 30’s and homes do not have heat.  A donation box is located in HPER 116.
